Minnesota!

Hey y'all, how long do I need to soak the hen before I poke around, and heaven help me, in to check for a stuck egg? I've got gloves and Vaseline at standby

And what Temp for the water? I know cats prefer hotter water temps for bathing - wondered about chickens
Do you think she is egg bound?
egg bound treatment
Ive given my baths before, they usually don't mind it, but they love the blow dry on low, warm but moving and not hot.
Well, I put a chick in with my broody girl twice. She pretty much gave the stink eye the entire time and then started pecking. Tonight she'll be hanging out in the garage with the chicks getting some 24hr light for a few days.

I have not had a episode of "as the chicken turns" in ages. BUT today I saw this and knew it needed to be shown.

The white hen is Bertha. Bert's sister and a half sister to the roosters in the video.

Bertha was visiting them in the guinea Gulag, most are serving a life sentence, (and the life is ending soon)..

Bertha is not a really good looking hen, so she gets cheap thrills by displaying her wares in front of the prisoners....

Here is the episode:

I have a oegb rooster with a huge comb, will putting bag balm on it every day prevent frostbite on the coldest days? And do wattles need the same treatment as the comb? I'm trying to prepare for any blizzards that might be coming....

Bag balm might help, can't hurt anyways. you can put it on the comb and wattles as well. He still might get frostbite, I had 2 with frostbite last year, they made it through ok. I did put bag balm on them after they got frost bit. I didn't put it on early enough (before they got frostbite). they got frost bit when the temp dropped in November pretty quick. Basically the frostbit portions of their combs turned black, then one day fell off and the comb underneath was a light pink. I made sure to put bagbal on the combs after the black stuff fell off to protect the tender pink part of the comb. They didn't get frostbite after that first time.

Here are my two that got frost bit last year, the buff orp and the gold commet

awwww, they probably recognize her as a broodmate and miss each other... so sweet

I almost always read and post on here from my phone, so when I am on my computer looking and can see certain thing like ovations and who is online currently it is interesting haha. I was surprised to see how many people were lurking our thread that I have never seen post :) we must be entertaining!

I used to post ALOT. Last couple years I read still, but haven't said much. Theri (Minnie) gave me heck about it so I've been trying to be more social again.

Did you put the chicks under her during the night? I've had more luck going that route. I've tried to do it during the day so I could watch them but it usually doesn't work for me. I think it bothered the hen even more when I kept checking on her.

A little side story: I had a mama hen this fall with two chicks, they were probably a month old or so, feathered out, sitting beside her on the roost and running around with her during the day. Then one day a fox came through the yard, took mama (and a rooster). Baby chicks are cheeping away and I figured I would have to set up some kind of little brooder cage for them so they wouldn't get lost but they were keeping up with the main bulk of the flock so I just let them be. At the same time this was happening, I had a hen that insisted she wanted to go broody (I kept telling her it was too late in the year as I kept taking her off the nest). I tried putting the chicks in the nest with her at night but the chicks just didn't like it, so the next few nights whenever I took the broody want-to-be off her nest, I would put her beside these 2 chicks on the roost. After a few days, I think she got the hint and is now taking care of them nicely.

It mostly depends on the humidity level in your coop, I usually put it on about once a week unless there is high moisture, than a little more often. And yes, the wattles too.

I feel so bad with my girls having to go into the coop so early these days... i know part of it is me not acclimating to daylight savings myself, but still. It takes me several weeks to get used to it.
I absolutely HATE dst!!
