Minnesota!

Mornin'peeps.
It starts, so my heated nipple waterer kicked on last night... it is good to know that it still works, sad that it needs to already. But, here we go!
It was 28 at my house according to the mercury thermometer at 4:30 this morning.

waiting for daylight in the vain hope that Jenny, the bo, is wandering around outside the run. She was heavy, and not prone to flying so I don't think it is likely that she would have flown. And if a hawk took her, I don't know if the hawk could have carried her, and for certain I would have seen feathers in the run.

Losing 3 hens to predators in the past two months is abnormal for me. I haven't lost any to predators for about two years prior, I think.

Definitely putting up the fencing to make the run smaller and restrict them to the hawk enclosure. I was hoping the 6 hens coming would have arrived before the fencing goes up so they weren't restricted to the smaller space while integrating with the rest of the flock. Much easier when there is more room to get away.

Sleepy, I'm sorry about the kitty. I hate this stuff, and especially the heavy heartedness that goes with it.

better days for everyone and their critters, I hope!

a little afraid to look at how cold it might be outside, there was frost forming last night when I was looking for the hen, and that was maybe 8 or 9 oclock.

have to plant tulips today or it just isn't going to happen!

oh happy day! went out at dawn, did the chickie chickie call while walking around looking for evidence, and out from the woods comes running and half flying the missing Jenny! wet, bedraggled, but unharmed. I'll take a closer look later this morning to check for puncture wounds in case a hawk carried her off, but judging from the lack of missing feathers I odn't think thats a problem. she hasn't molted yet.

the woods she came from are not where my flock has ever ever wandered, as it is past the meadow.

I'm sure I annoyed all the hunters with my calling not to mention cries of jubilation, but....

Woot woot! That is so wonderful, I was hoping for a good outcome with her, that is just wonderful news. I'd bring her in and blow dry her, get her nice and warmed up. Yey! :D

A mama cat and her 4 kittens came with the farm when we moved here. We decided to keep them. Anyway, our mama kitty was missing for 2 weeks. She came home last night, very hungry, but otherwise looking good. We were very happy to see her!
But... Today, one of her grown babies got hit on the road. We knew it was bound to happen, because the cats keep crossing the road, but I can't keep them locked in that barn all day, and you can't train a cat. Hoping they learn to watch out before we lose any more. At least it was quick, and we didn't have to make any decisions. .. *sigh*

Sorry you lost a kitty :-(

Lots happened, Hope I remember it all.

BC sorry to hear about your chick ( chicks in my book have no age limit as long as they have feathers)

Lala Glad yours came back alive, The mental picture of you in your PJ's running around yelling "Chickie Chickie" is priceless. I bet the deer hunters were thrilled with you.

Sleepy sorry about your Kitten. We live on a very busy road also and understand the fear.

BYW I will be visiting this thread wearing a helmet, in case some one else takes a smack at me. I have to protect this little brain.

I am done with Grandpa Daycare for a few days, I never knew my son going to OTS ( think I have the right acronym) was going to be such a PITA to me.

I did not get back until dark last night. My wife did not get home until after me. All the chickens and guineas had put themselves to bed. All but 5 turkeys did not.

I had 4 on the fence around their run, and Blanchranch's dinner was on the ground outside the fence. I had to help him waddle into the coop, He is so big I did not want to try lifting him.

Then I picked a smaller blue off the fence. ( I was going to say grey but did not want the wrath of Minnie for using the wrong term) He went with a little complaining and wing flopping. I grabbed his wings and pinned them down while I carried him inside.

Next I grabbed the one that instigated sit out strike, Penguin, My DW's favorite, my PITA. He thinks he is above the rules and a tough guy. As soon as I grabbed him and put him under my arm, he started crying like a little girl. Screaming and kicking the whole time. It was hard to believe the spoiled brat would cry like a chick.

Next was JJ, the worlds most perfect turkey Tom. I am sure he was only out there because of something Penguin said or did. JJ is not a huge turkey even at 2 1/2 years old. I suspect he had poor nutrition as a chick/poult. He was happy to have me carry him to safety and did not fight at all, but he is use to being carried and held.

Last one was "sidekick". Sidekick is not bright, and has no brain of his own. He simply does whatever JJ does. He is a year and a half old and HUGE! I had to lift him off the rail, over 6 ft above the ground. I kind of dropped him, lifting him off. Then I had to run him down, catch him and carry him into the coop. I ended up hurting my back slightly, all because Penguin is a PITA!

Sleepy: sorry about kitty cat. Rough to see that sometimes.

Yay LaLa you found her! I could just envision her running and flapping coming back from the big dark woods. Bless her.

Thank you Minnie. We do try around here and one being taken like that is rare around here-- thank goodness- we've actually been pretty lucky.
She was one of the henopausals. So I'll have room for birds next spring. :D that's the silver lining. Nonetheless, I respect her space she held in our flock and the little things she did that made us smile. And I wish her death would have been a little easier. But it's part of life. And the show goes on.

I have Roger and girls locked in the run here early this morning and tucked their water under the covered run. It was outside the coop and run at the time and by the feathers she was probably taken having a drink. It's a clear day and I think I'll probably go let them out shortly. Roger usually gives a predator call when something like a hawk is harassing. I can intervene or thwart predators just by walking out into the yard today... Sadie by me
