Minnesota!

And my partner commented that I should just book a room at the Hilton for my chickens, the way I fuss over them.

Can you imagine walking into the lobby of the Hilton with 39 chickens ?
And why do I have 39 chickens? Not 40?

I barely got the new Turkey roosting coop started and the dang building inspectors came to look over the project, even sat on the top of the ladder and watched us work.

LOL - guess thats one hazard of turkeys I never thouht of. They were probably thinking you were just providing them with much needed new roosts!

We had the dance fund raiser today. It went well, but even though we made $375, I don't know as it was worth it, really. Once you break it down to how much was spent, the time to do it and all that, then it is split 20 ways, it doesn't come out to be much. Still, it was a fun thing to do, I suppose. I am shocked how many people just bought stuff instead of making it. Even if someone isn't a good baker, Rice Krispies treats are not difficult and probably would have sold well. If we do it next year, I think we charge more and we know what items did the best to do again and what really didn't go all that well.

bake sales, yeah they are tough to organize. Puppy chow is good for those that won't bake, and it sells well in this area at least.

a few weeks ago i stopped at a garage sale and a little girl had a koolaid and banana bread table. I asked her if she made the banana bread and she said yes, from scratch. got home, took a bite, tossed it in the trash. It was a mix, and the chemically taste made it worthless. Little girl was probably being honest, "scratch" these days means you put it in a pan.

yeah yeah yeah, I'm a cranky old woman this morning! best get myself some coffee.

yesterday I stopped by the hinckley church craft and bake sale to pick up some lefse. THe woman who makes it each year makes the absolute best lefse, but this year, there wasn't any. Thinking she might have been an older church member who just isn't up to it anymore. I'm learning to make it, goes best to do it with a couple of friends.

But the bake sales, they sure aren't like they used to be. Choc dipped oreos. Cookies the size of a small plate (easier and faster to make). cookies made from mixes. frozen pies.

LEFSE!!!!

I wan lefse! I love it. but no one makes it. You can buy that stuff in the store but there is something off with the taste of it. When I was a kid and I mean younger than Holm is now, there was an old Norwegian woman who made lefse every year. It was the best, maybe it is because I remember it through the fogginess of youth. I have tried to find a lefse like it for 40 years with no success. She passed about 45 years ago and I have not had good lefse since.

Scandiafowl, I have never heard of a heated hose. Do they have such a thing? Would you dare leave it hooked up or would you have to put it away after each use? I am thinking taking it out and putting it away each time would make a bucket of water easier and faster.

I am trying to get Judy to allow me to take one sweet little turkey on vacation, She is refusing, I told her I would ask the motels about their pet/turkey policy.

Ethel and Judy discussing how great I am.

Chicken math forbids odd numbers... Better start looking for 11 to make it a round 50 while you are at it

I have a question, It seems there is one thing " He who knows everything" does not know.

Blanchranch is getting my largest BBB (turkey) He is coming Wednesday to send it to camp.

He plans on eating him a week from today at his Friends Giving day feast. This is a HUGE BBB at this point. I have never raised one before, I raised a BBW 35 years ago when my kids were young but it never got as big as this one is.

When he walks his knees or hips look like they are going to give out. He does not do a lot of walking anymore. He still walks but does not run and play with the rest of them. He spends most of his day sitting by the feeder eating. He still walks and comes outside but mainly sits.

I have been watching him and worrying for a week now and have told Blanchranch my concerns. He wants a fresh turkey I understand that too. I have raised lots of CX's broilers and seen them get into this shape. I normally send them to camp at this point. When I process them I have found they have ascites to some degree, but that does not seem to affect the taste or texture of the meat. I suspect this turkey has some ascites. we will see when he goes to camp.

Now the question part. If he is being eaten next Sunday what is the earliest he can be processed? I have seen people say freezing time does not count as resting, I have found freezing and thawing seems to do the resting required. Thoughts?

How long could he be kept in a fridge without degrading taste or safety?

Anyway any thoughts on all these and other implied question are appreciated. I have another BBB but he is very active and not as large as Jeff's is.

I worry will he make it to Wednesday or not. Anyways what is everyone's thoughts.

yeah, my partner Sue cannot figure out why it takes me so long to do chicken chores. I've tried to explain, but....you know, you have to watch them, and check things, and there is always something that needs to be done. And I get the comments from others about spoiling the chickens. maybe. I don't think so. really, just trying to provide the basics takes enough time and money. Course, my idea of the basics might be more than others. I know some people raise them just on corn and a bucket of water in a dirt pen. they survive. I would like mine to thrive and be healthy, and if you arent replacing the entire flock every other year, then it is in my best interests to go for more than survival and shoot for thriving.
