They got the space and the ways to do it so there is no frostbit feet, and losses to cold temps. But I will tell you that I personally follow traditional times for bringing up chicks. And that is in the spring. I brood in a car garage that has insulation...but it's not in the house. Temps in the garage have ranged from 40's-70's but under a brooder lamp my chicks have flourished. And by the time they are feathered out the grass is green and the bugs are jumping and they are off learning everything there is to learn about being a chicken. I like spring. The Wild turkeys, the wild ducks and geese like spring...so I just follow their lead.

Hey; I like spring too!

Thank you guys, for the warm welcome lol.

Wow, everyone lives so far! I thought I'd see more folks from Oakdale, Saint Paul, Minneapolis, Stillwater :/ It's ok. I hope to see some of you guys :)

well Ralphie, I like you too. we will just have to disagree about wallyworld. (You can always read the court docs).

but it still leaves lots of folks no where else to buy things at since so many small businesses in small towns went out of business. I know you can't buy clothes in pine city any more. or get a prescription filled. or find birthday cards. bakery is gone. can't buy toys, shoes, boots. shoelaces. books. so....if you don't shop walmart, you have to drive 45 minuters to cambridge. we do have a 100+year old hardware store, though!

been kind of lazy today. made a beef wild rice soup with soup bones from the freezer. if it tasts half as good as it smells, it will be wonderful.

Almost 600 posts to read through....eeeek. Broody hen will be going back to the coop tonight. I've kept her in broody jail for about 5 days now and I think "the look" has left her eyes :)

The maran chicks are growing like weeds! I'll miss their fluff. I have a group of 6 little Roos that run to meet me everytime I open the cage door. I wish I could keep them all. I still only plan on holding on to two. Time to consider rehoming the obvious Roosters....

I'm excited for another nice deer hunting weekend. Taking naps in the sun is much more better than taking naps in the snow.

I was trying to think of what to make for supper. I have 2 packages of beef soup bones in fridge freezer. Dang you should have said this earlier. I am thinking pizza, cause I need to run to Runnings for more netting.

Do not tell Judy this. I assured her I had enough when I started the turkey house.

I've had mine up and plugged in for a couple weeks, it has kicked on twice now (this morning is one of those). I think it is time to get yours set up and out there, (you don't have to plug it in yet if you don't want) but why put off doing stuff till it is freezing, when you can do it this weekend when it is nice? ;) I also had to chase my dog out of the run 2 times this week when I brought out treats he wanted, he's never done that before! argghhhh
Oh gosh Cluckies...I so know it would be good to be prepared. But as a life long procrastinator I seem to enjoy making my life harder on my self. LOL :gig  Time to get on it! I still need to finish my Foiled Bubble wrap experiment for the inside of the coop and get the flat panel mounted beack up in the coop. I noticed the shavings need to come out too. It's time for coop maintenance day. My basement also needs to be "handled". It seems it's suffering from "here a pile, there a pile." Organization makes me feels so good. Why don't I do it?!
I hear that, I have a hundred areas to organize in the house, but for some reason I do not mind doing the chicken coop stuff, go figure...
My week has been crazy, just crazy! So as some of you may remember, we got two young Nigerian Dwarf kids in August (a doeling and her whether brother). They were born the middle of April and have been so much fun to have. We really enjoy them. This is a picture from in August. Duchess and Gonzo! I was doing chores on Monday all day, since its my day off. Around 6:30 pm I put the goats in their pen, fed the dogs, walked in the house to get some clean water for the goats (very picky about water). When I walked into the pen, Duchess was laying on the straw bleating at me, which is strange, and then I realized why - she was kidding. What???? Didn't know she was pregnant and didn't expect it because she is way, way too young. Gestation for goats are 145-150+ days. That means she was approximately 2 months old when she got pregnant. It is highly unusual, since 8 weeks is the earliest they can be fertile, but most are not. The friends that we got the goats from said that their buck and escaped into the doe pen 2x this summer for less than a day each but were flabbergasted that the tiny doeling was bred by him. Long story short, she had the baby in less than 15 minutes. Our friend came over to help me with them, since we've never had goats and I didn't know what to do (hubby was out of town, of course, too). She now has a little buckling at her side, named Walhart (or Wally). The goats are the DD for 4h, so she named him. She is feeding him, but I'm not sure if he is getting enough to eat since mom is so young and not really mature. Terrible time of year to have a little one, especially when you had no idea he was coming. It is not warm enough for him. Here are some pictures of Wally! These were taken the night he was born. He is about a foot tall. His "coat" is the sleeve of a sweatshirt to help him stay warm. Don't want him mistaken for a deer, of course.;) My week has revolved around making sure mom and son are doing well along with my work schedule, taking care of the chickens, hubbies pheasants, dogs, cats and single parenting it till yesterday. I'm exhausted and I need to get outside to get more yardwork and coop work done.
Wow, what a week you've had! OH MY GOSH, so cute!

Coldupnorth, I was remiss in my duties as Thread Chaplin, in welcoming your new born. Who knew Goats were like rabbits and could have babies at 7 months! Wally is a cute little guy...

It makes me think I should start collecting goats. Again, Please do not tell Judy this. Let her find out on her own, when she goes into the barn and sees them there. I can then deny knowing how they got there.

I had no idea goats could get pregnant that early, wow! Super cute baby though!

Yuck! I washed clothes in a laundry mat most of the summer (we were living in a camper at my folk's farm over the summer, between houses, and didn't like hanging clothes on the line, Laundromat is easier, and I can't stand crunchy clothes.) I am SOOO glad to have a nice washer and dryer again.

Isn't just amazing that a person does not realize what they have until they don't. I am so fortunate and I count everyday as a blessing. Especially IF the chicks have been allowed to free-range that day and they are back in the coop. Stupid but just a little thing like that I am thankful for.

I KNOW you are not talking about ME! Just because I have 6 Silkies that are in my brooder house that my tom cat thinks he is the brood hen for!
