Ok so is it normal, after mating, for a Roo to jump off and proceed to peck the hen on the head?

Rusty, BLH, is claiming his ladies. Gracie, my "purple princess"

is actively hiding from him - so much so she allowed me to walk right up to her and pick her up. When I did Rusty proceeded to flog me, right in the face. I've told him he's Sunday dinner this week.

I've heard of mean roosters but I've never heard of one jumping a person for attending a hen.

I'm gonna have a scar for sure. And this is AFTER it was cleaned up. He ripped me good but fortunately not very deep.

I had a mean little rooster that would attack both me and the hen that I touched if I ever touched one where he could see, even just to give her a scoot inside the door. Soup.
Lucky he didn't get your eye.

It is extremely common for a rooster to get upset when a person messes with the ladies, especially right after he's been mating. He sees it as competition. It is worse when the weather starts warming in the late winter and spring. Also, young males just coming into sexual maturity will get sassy. I wouldn't keep him around if he attacked if I were you. If he is going at your face, that is really bad, and worse if you have kids anywhere around your birds.

So sorry. You don't need a rooster like the breeding. Soup time.

Today's progress does not look very good of course it has only been two day on the anabiotic's. I gave her the medication this morning and put a warm moist rag over her eyes. Her right eye is completely sealed shut and Harden. And she keeps yawning like she is trying to breath or pop her eardrums. She has no wheezing or coughing or sneezing iand nothing is draining from her nose her breath smells fine and the roof of her mouth looks clear and has a nice creamy peach color. I know I should probably cull her that would probably be the most humane thing to do. So why can't I do it.. I think just make it through today and see how it goes..

Poor girl. Hope a miracle happens. I know you will do what is best.

@scandiafowl sorry to hear about you mom.

@Mistahbue That looks like it hurts. I agree, time to go to camp. I have a couple that need to go to camp, just because I have too many roosters.

@Coffee 1st I'm so sorry about your little hen. That's the hard part of being their caretakers.

@Minniechickmama there was a time I could do a million things in a day, not anymore. Maybe I got lazy, or maybe I got smart.

I love seeing all the pictures & reading all the posts, thanks everyone. I always forget to take pictures, except of the grandkids. I will try to remember to get pictures of the nnew coop that I'm working on. It looks so nice, but really I'm just using up a bunch of stuff from the remodel at our store & boards from around here. I've had to buy the wood for the run & am having someone else build that. I guess I'm still trainable.

And for all of you that have been so supportive on the health issues, UPDATE DH's surgery which was scheduled for Friday is now postponed, again! This time it was due to our GM, of almost 20 yrs, gave his notice. It will be strange driving DH back & forth to work again. I think once he has surgery, then I'll let y'all know that it actually happened.

Tonight I put everyone in lock down. It's really noisy out there tonight with 'yotes. They are close too.

Morning, everyone!

its going to be a day of thanksgiving prep - make the stuffing, pumpkin pie and pecan pie.
I've been tending to the outside, you know - picking up all that stuff that needs to be stored for the winter (pails, waterers, bird baths), so all my stuff is indoors today, except for some chicken tv.

Looking forward to seeing how the flock is mixing, or not....

They have been getting dry mash for a few days - when you put feed out at 4 am, it can't be a wet mash because it will be frozen by 7 when the sun comes up. But today, I can take the feed pans, dump out the stuff into a big pail, mix it up with some old milk and water, and feed it back. The flock really isn't very fond of dry mash. By about Jan, when it is really nasty out there, I get some crumbles or pellets for a month or two.

If no one goes home with the turkey carcass for soup, it will go to the yard for the chickens on friday. They can pick that thing clean like you can't imagine!

THe turkey neck, giblets, heart, and liver go to the them as well. Liver set aside, the rest simmers on the stove for the broth used for gravy, and then the broth is strained and everything that isn't broth goes to the chickens.

and.....plate scrapings go to them too, so the the chickens have their own thanksgiving!

I'm up early as welll...

Morning everyone!

DD decided not to finish a book report until last night then presented me with a sloppy mess of work. Sent her to bed after dinner and instructed her to reread the book.

She messed with a loose tooth and started crying because it hurt. We pulled that bad boy out, she cried some more and fell asleep in my bed.

Now she gets to rewrite the report. :-)

I'm home for the next five days with my mom while she heals. Hopefully by Monday I'll be able to return to work.
