No chicken here, but thought I'd share my view for the next 2 weeks! The anxiety of MCM's hatching was getting too much for us so we took the kiddos (2 and 8 months) to southern Florida until the 12th. I'm still following everything, just from a cabana while wearing a swimsuit and not mud boots :)

You are noble to suffer with us. I'll be waving hello from Cancun in a week :)

I candled the eggs tonight. I lost a few so far, but most of those just looked like they were not fertile, so we shall see how the rest go. It doesn't help when I set my mini mag on top of the incubator and it rolls off onto eggs and breaks into them. I am letting them continue since the membrane didn't get broken too.

One thing I must say, this new fan is so QUIET!!! I love it. The others were loud and as they were going out got louder. This one is also not connected directly to the wiring in the incubator, but is plugged directly into the power strip. Had I known that earlier on that that was what I got, I could have had the new ones all hooked up long ago. I thought I just got a bad batch of fans. Sheesh. I know little to nothing about electrical stuff, and when I asked my husband before, I swear he said I needed 110v. Well, I needed 12v to replace them the way they were. The newer ones are all metal too, not cheap plastic like they came with.

I have another batch going into the hatcher this week, in fact, I think tomorrow or Tuesday. I have a couple of Silkies in this one, but I am not sure on the Blues, they have given me eggs, but not much fertility. I am not sure why so I may add some stuff to their water to see if the gives them a boost. Oh, and one hen in there thinks I should let her set on eggs. Ain't happening unless I get a special little nest made for her, but if it will break her, I might let her take care of some eggs for me.

What happened to my wonderful Saturday? Even the chickens didn't want to go out this morning.
They plowed their way out of the coop - then turned around and walked back in.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry Scandia I didnt mean for that to sound sexist.

No worries - just wanted to tease a bit.
I'm actually envious of you. Calves are adorable creatures!
Kelley Farms, just south of our place has hundreds ( so it seems) of Angus. Their pastures border the road I use to drive to work.
When calving season starts it's as if they are popping up everywhere! They run, jump and chase each other, so fun to watch!

Probably nothing new to many but still an interesting read.

I hate coming across stuff like that because there are so many uninformed people who have to post comments and spread BS. For instance, the testing done on poultry for show is NOT for Mareks. However, you can't show them without proof of testing for Pollorum and Typhoid strains of Salmonella.

I did not realize there was a salmonella vaccine we could use, but I have to wonder, with many strains of salmonella, which one do they vaccinate for?
And why the heck not make it mandatory in the US by commercial producers? Oh, I know, because that would require more work and $ put into them that the commercial producers don't want to have to mess with. I feel a soap box rant coming on, so I will have to stop here ;)

@minniechickmama I can't remember, but one of the virus vaccines exposed the birds to it, and then any non-vaccinated birds could potentially get it as well. Do you remember if that was one of those two?

I brought the roo to the vet today, ugh. $330 later!!! :( I was hoping to find out more. So far we have 1) the xrays show his heart is good 2) the rattle is most likely not in his lungs, but deeper- like his voice area 3) he has some form of round worm even after all the wormer the lady gave him, possibly gape worm but he can't say for certain, just some sort of round worm, and he had a lot of negative something in his poo when there should be more positive (I'm getting techy I know) 4) the vet thinks it's more than just worms so he gave him antibiotics as well as wormer

He told me either to treat him, bring him in for necropsy, or cull. I chose treat because he hasn't gotten any worse- he just hasn't gotten any better.

I called the lady I bought him from. She told me there's no way he could have had lice or worms and wants to talk to the vet. When I called her back to tell her the vet would call, she never answered... big surprise. I left a message saying I wanted a refund for just the roo. I think that's more than fair. I'm not holding my breath.
