Minnesota!

Lice!!!! not getting as many eggs as I thought I should be getting, so checked a chicken tonight on the roost. Yup, lice. dang it! Worst thing is I'm a little overloaded right now. Am booked and can't take time off work right now til maybe thurs or friday. I have to be on the road tomorrow at 7 am, am too tired to tackle anything right now, and fresh hay is over at Sue's for storage. And the meter pole is shorting out for some reason (electrician coming next week) and I need power to shop vac that coop out.

I guess, I can at least dust them in the morning while it is dark. Then clean out coop as soon as I can take a day off. and I feel guilty because I really should be out there right now dusting the poor girls. shoot, I'm a rotten chicken keeper.

I am so disgusted!

Got up at 4 am to dust the flock. Did a super thorough check of each and every one of them by headlamp, and found 4 of 25 chickens infested with lice, and one of those also had red mites. One of the girls with lice, oh this is horrible, had such a bad infestation that she had the lollipop ends of the feather shaft with gigantic lice egg clusters. I think I must have missed her a couple of months ago when I was dusting everyone. She has a look alike, and sometimes when you are wrangling birds by yourself in the dark, you can get mixed up. If there were two of us, I would have taken pictures but that wasn't possible.

I didnt do a coop cleanout in the winter when I had that last infestation.

Am going to do one Saturday or Sunday, cant remember which day I have open. And of course retreat everyone in 7 or 10 days, have to look that up as I never ever remember which it is.

Also am going to add some sulfur to the feed for a couple of weeks as that is very effective too.

off to the cities for the day.

heres hoping that any of you doing a body check on a chicken come up with ZILCH!!!

These are the red bell waters that I bought for five bucks for two

http://www.qcsupply.com/422210-plasson-broiler-drinker.html

They are used but in very good shape I just will need to sanitize them real well I think

They even came with an adapter for a hose

wow, the reviews on that type of waterer make them sound absolutely wonderful. I'll be interested to hear how you like them after you've had a chance to try them out. I've never heard of them before

Were you worried you got the wrong breed? I'm picking up a few SS later this week from the local feed store. Oh man, I hope they have it right.....
MCM made a comment about them looking very much like welsummer chicks that made for some brief anxiety while I googled what the chicks should look like haha it was pretty funny
