I learned it the hard way when DD started showing chickens and we had to bathe them....boy is that a fun experience EVERYONE should try. Anyway, the under the breast bone and legs helps to free up a hand so you can actually wash the dern critter! I used a sponge to drip the water and soapy water over her and then rinse with both hands. They like it better because they feel "safe" sitting on something that feels secure to them. Not much fighting going on when we adopted this technique! Live and learn!!!!
You can also just let them perch on your index finger but you better put your thumb over top of their feet or they will be in flight!!! LOL
