Miss MoneyPenny

Brenda, I just saw this. I'm sorry you lost your Penny, but it was mercifully swift, as I'm sure you know. Wish we were close enough that I could just give you another girl to help ease the pain of losing Penny.

I'm terribly sorry you lost your little friend.

I don't want to upset you - but do watch your other chicken(s) as Marek's is extremely contagious. In fact, it can travel on the wind farther than most people would guess. The infinitely small bits of feather dander that we almost can't see carries the disease around. It can come on quickly, or it can grow slowly over a number of years and then suddenly show itself. So do watch your hens. I'm sorry.

I hope to heaven though that others on this list sit up and take notice that Marek's isn't just something that happens to big breeders. It isn't something that a backyard flock is at all immune to. Unless we ask the breeder of our birds to vaccinate them at birth they are NOT vaccinated. Adding insult to injury too many breeders simply SKIP vaccinating bantams at all. I've been nearly laughed at too many times for my views on the dangers of Marek's. Please, EVERYONE, only buy vaccinated stock. And if you hatch your own, you can buy small quantities of freeze dried tablets to create a vaccine you can give. It only costs dollars to buy it - not big money.

My sympathies. Please be a beacon of encouragement for all your fellow chicken keepers to vaccinate their birds.

*hugs*

Quoting another web forum about where to get Marek's freeze dried vaccine:

Clausing Company, Nicotee, FL 34268 (no street address) 941-or 843-993-2542. Ask for tablet marked in quarters. Vaccine is freeze dried, in a vial and refrigerated--keep unused part refrigerated. The vaccine and diluent is enough for 1000 birds, but you can use it in 4ths. Only good for an hour after mixing- $11 Postpaid (YEAR 2000 PRICING) One needle comes with the order, I ordered 3 extra needles for each hatch. --requires care--live vaccines are not to be played with -

No problem, Red-hen...

If I was going to get chicks, I would most certainly get them vaccinated...
Tom and Jerry were hatched at school so they were vaccinated, and since Slifer and Obelisk came from the same farm, THEY weren't either...
Penny, I bought at a NEBC show, so I don't know whether she was or not...but I would presume so...
I would almost ASSume that Obelisk would've gotten it from Penny rather than the other way around...

The most chickens I've ever had at one time is a total of 3...they're all pets...

Thanks for your kind offer, Cyn...just toss her over the fence...wink...

Maybe Ernie will break down and let me get another one, yeah right, like when pigs fly...

Obelisk is twitchier than normal...very skittish today. Not that I blame her. She's also wanting to go out, which isn't going to happen today. Even my outside birds are keeping their eyes to the sky today.

Spotted,

I went sleuthing on your personal page to find your post about Penny. I knew you didn't have her any longer as I'd read comments you'd made on various posts but didn't know what happened. Now I know.

(Better late than never!) I'm so sorry this had to happen; I KNOW how hard it is to see them so sick! :aww And in some post I read, you mentioned Snorkie being over the rainbow bridge. Is that right??!! What happened? I need to get on BYC more!!!!!! Again, I'm so sorry about Penny. I hope Obelisk is fine.

Hi Ellen...Thanks for you condolences...
Our dear Snorkie got taken by a predator....CC had a heckuva time with them in December...a whole bunch got taken too...
Obelisk is fine...more nervous than usual, but she's doing alright...she's more cuddly.
