Business Expense & Deductions:
Chicken Coops / Chickens / Fine Dining & Travel (Executive Planning w/DS) / Internet Access (Educational Expense/ BackYard Chickens/ Trade Magazines) - etc...

The government is here to help! (especially the average citizen)
Go to IRS.GOV and check out starting a business and all the expenses you can write off.

Put up a sign "Eggs for Sale" ... if you have all roosters no problem get govt. loan to expand. You are in business.
The problem then becomes you might save so much money on your taxes you won't need to raise chickens!

In that case see IRS Publication "Hobbies"
But to pull that one off it would depend on "what your definition of "is" is." But hey, who knows? even that might work.

If you start a business you could write off expenses. You have to file a schedule C form, you have to have a biz license with your state and in my case, the city. A lot of cities have rules on foot traffic in residential areas. You have to do inventory on chicken feed, scratch and anything else you buy for them. Not just saying one bottle of something. You have to say 8oz of x product at x dollars an oz equals x amount in inventory. I also believe there is only so many years your biz can file as a loss as well, but I am not sure. It's been a while since I had my own biz. Stuff you buy online should be reported so you can pay taxes on it. If you have something that goes down in value you have to figure the rate of loss every year so you can put what equipment you have. Your CPA will charge you more because you are a business instead of a person.

Bottom line? It's not really that easy. You are not going to save that much in taxes. I also really doubt the gov will give you a loan for a small time chicken farm. I do know for a fact that the government does not give small business grants.
