Missed the Easter hatchalong, anyone else setting 4/10?

Well, day one and we've already got a bump. When hubby went over to check the incubator tonight it was hovering just under 102. Could have been worse, but now I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this doesn't mean we'll have temperature fluctuations the way we did when we added the auto turner.

Eeeeeewwwwwwww! :sick

I had a horrible incubator last year... Gave me conniptions. But even with temp spikes to 104 and temp drops to I forget what, I managed to hatch out 5 eggs.

I am setting Cream Legbar eggs on Saturday. I got them from a fellow BYC member DCChicken. Fingers crossed as this is my first time with shipped eggs.

I have a pet quality black silkie rooster, 3 RIR hens and 3 Barred Rock hens in my flock. Put in 5 BR and 2 RIR eggs and am hoping to get a few good hens that will go broody once in a while and a nice rooster. This is my first hatch of any kind and I just set them in my homemade free-ish (already had everything I needed) dry still air incubator at 11 am Pacific.

Interesting! Do you have vent holes? Supposedly oxygen isn't that important for the first....uh....... 8 days, but then it is important to have good oxygen levels. Of course, if you are opening the box to turn eggs, that might be enough.

Yeah I was going for a small airflow as I have some intake holes down low by my 10 watt cfl light (smaller cooler than most of these you see I believe; didn't need much heat), a foil deflector to keep the heat low and outlet holes on the upper and opposite side by the eggs that are always open and have a few on the top (duct tape open/close and the one with the plastic tubing for water adding the last 3 days) over the eggs . I've tested it for last 3 days (been hot here) and my exercise room stays pretty stable and since I am not using a thermostat the max temp it was able to reach was 101.7F and in the morning it cools to 99.4F with a consistent humidity of 25% without any water.

I wish I had a room in the house with such stable temperatures! And bonus, the BR crosses will be sex-linked (females solid black, males black with a white dot at hatch). I want to get some barred birds, maybe cuckoo marans or maybe barred rocks, to add to my flock so that I can hatch sex-link chicks next year. We hatch mostly for meat for our freezer, but I'm sure I would be able to sell pullets as layers around here and if I knew that they were female at hatch I wouldn't have to feed them out for a few weeks before selling them as layers.
