I noticed this week that several of my hens are missing feathers on their backs at the base of their tails, and that their skin looks crusty (especially on the 2 black star sexlinks- Janis and Lamborghini). We have 6 hens and a rooster all that we’ve raised from hatchlings that are about 9 months old.
I picked one of the hens up and couldn’t see any nits on her feathers when I was looking at her.
Janis is in the worst condition and pooped before I picked her up so I attached a picture for reference with her back.
We use shredded paper for bedding in their coop that I dust with a small amount of DTE. The bedding is dry and I change it out about once a week or 10 days once it’s poopy under their roost. It has been really wet recently, so their dust bath hasn’t been dry.
I have a vet down the street- should I take her in? Does anyone recommend a treatment or have a way to Id what is going on?

I would guess that the rooster is treading too hard. I would recommend hen aprons to help them recover.
Six hens is a bit too few for a rooster.

Wellllll, the rooster was SUPPOSED to be a hen... but one day he crowed and he’s a Bielefelder so he’s beautiful too. I’ll look in to aprons
