Missing Chicken

Unfortuantely we found her and there was not much left. And we saw the hawk perched in a tree watching the other chickens who will not come out of their closed in run. We shut the door just to make sure. She was actually at the edge of the hedges where they like to nap during the day. She probably tried to make it there. Our land is mostly pasture with a few trees. The chickens rarely go into the open land unless they are following us. Anybody know how to get a hawk to leave? She was such a nice Chicken

:welcome :frow So sorry for your loss. We are rural on a dead end road. Our land is mostly open pasture. I don't let my birds free range anymore due to losses in the past. My birds have nice large covered pens, electric wires around the coops and pens and concrete under the gates all due to losses in the past. I also have several game cameras on my property. When you free range it's the risk you take. Good luck...

I'm so sorry, that is heartbreaking. I am new at this too. I also have hawks and even eagles that fly over our house and lost one of mine over a week ago. I know how it feels, but I don't know how to keep the birds of prey away and I'm not sure you can.
:welcome :frow So sorry for your loss too. The only thing is to make sure your birds are safe as I said in the previous post. I have lost quite a few birds over the years too. Lessons learned the hard way. Good luck...

either shoot at the hawk or trap it and re-locate it by catching some other birds and put a big net over them with the birds inside and the hawk will get tangled
:welcome :frow As you know it's illegal to kill a bird of prey unless you get a permit. I have good heavy duty netting covering all of my pens. The netting has been up for several years and I have only once had an owl get caught in it. We managed to get the owl out and into a cage and called a wildlife rescue who came and got it. It was going through some crappy netting that I have since replaced. I thought even though it was crappy it would still deter any aerial predator, wrong. It tried to go through the good netting and got caught. The rescue said they had a release area and that it shouldn't be back. Good luck...
