? ? ?)

This is the story of an epic journey of a man and his goat who are trekking across America to raise money for an orphanage in Africa. They are currently in Missouri having just posted from St. Louis.

We are in Saint Louis City and have had chickens for about 5 years now.

I'm looking to improve ventilation in my coop and I have a couple questions for you all.

1. Does anyone have an open bottom coop? By that I mean a coop with a wire mesh floor that allows the droppings to fall through to the ground. If so, how does your coop work in the winter?

2. Has anyone used a powered attic vent to improve air circulation? I'm concerned it will be too loud.

3. How far above the roosts are your winter ventilation openings?

And a gratuitous picture of our hens... : )

Thanks for the info!

Andrew
I'd be wary of a wire floor. Large enough of a mesh to allow droppings to fall through may lead to foot problems and rodent intrusion.

I wouldn't worry about the noise of a vent.

I have huge openings at roost height on both east and west walls. I don't adhere to the no draft thing. Chickens can live in trees.

Just wanted to make you aware of a more active Missouri thread.

Are you a member of our meetup group noted in post 384 above?

Excelsior Springs here folks. Glad to see all the flock keepers here. We need to set up an event for our group. Maybe at the state Fair each year. A pic NIC,or swap, maybe a show. Take care, T
Excellent idea.

Good evening folks from Southwest Missouri. Hope all is well. I pray your larders are stocked and barns full of hay. It was a beautiful day here on our little piece of heaven. I took my three year old daughter on a walk down our long driveway and she wanted to run back, so we did. Our hay is freshly cut and we had run a test windrow to find the grass still too green underneath, so we will bale it tomorrow. I love the smell of fresh cut hay, It takes me back to when I was a kid and we would work in the hay field all day and mom would bring us lunch and sun tea. We would drink out of canning jars and sit under a big elm tree.

When we got home from our walk, our chickens and turkeys stood at the ready for us to drop fresh clover in their runs(our nightly ritual). Yesterday, my kids went to the creek and caught a bunch of crawdads. They fed them to the chickens. I think my poultry is cajun. They loved them.

Good night and God bless.
