Illinois does not have an "e.""Illinoise." My teeth are shorter than they used to be, because of this. Missouri is next to Illinoise so I hear this a lot. Back in Colorado, Sister Mary Elephant pounded into our little skulls that it is pronounced IllinOY, the S is silent, so I assumed that people who actually lived in the neighborhood would know that. Apparently not.
