I am hoping to get some input on Mr. M, I have read that the blue black feathers on his shoulders meant a possible split to Black shoulder. Q8 mentioned that he thought M had some Green blood. Of interest is the color of the back feathers, they appear mostly gold instead of the normal green.

What do you think?

Brad told me few days ago that split males sometimes will show the color they are split to, do you know if he split to another color?

Like this guy, you can see some orange feathers on his wings, he is split peach.

KsKingBee how old is Mr. M? 4 or 5 years old? I think he is split to black shoulder. I also think as he gets older, he might get more of a dark shoulder patch there. Spalding peafowl will also show dark areas where barring should be, but if he is a Spalding he would be so low % that I doubt you would be seeing that kind of green trait. I say he is split to black shoulder.

My males have golden looking back feathers this time of year. When they grow in new back feathers, they are a beautiful golden color, then they fade to more of a green/blue color. The difference is easier to see when they start molting the old back feathers and get the new fresh ones in.

I wish that my camera would have shown the beautiful blue/ green feathers on the shoulders. I think there are more this year than last year. If I can get a better picture that shows the actual colors I may send it to Brad. As it is now, he was a beautiful yard bird last year and will probably stay that way.

I think he is at least five years old. I assume that molting is over for this year, I am not seeing any loose feathers in the pens now. The difference is striking between him and the IBs backs, the IBs are mostly blue/green much like Freckles here, an IBBS I bought suspecting possible WE. I suspect you are right about being split to BS, I am just wanting to get some verification if he really is or not. Thank you for responding.

This picture is from the Purple Black Shoulder thread that Mindy started. She had asked about the color of the feathers behind the head on my PBS hen and I added this pic just for fun. No, this is a coming on five year old Spaulding Purple Black Shoulder I recently bought from ChooksChicks who got it from Deerman.


This is him and his six month old son. They are too new and precious to let free range.

The bird above and the bird below look like the same bird to me. Am I just not understanding what you have written?
