Mites and ants under waterer

My waterer is on the ground and there's always ants and mites beneath it when I pick it up each day. I might move the waterer for now and put down DE there. Thoughts?

My thoughts are to get some permethrin spray.

DE doesn't work nor can it even attempt to work if it is damp/wet.

I'd wait for that patch of dirt to dry before sprinkling DE on it, that's all I have right now. :/

Since you are seeing mites you really should invest in some permethrin and spray all the cracks and crevices of your coop before they eat your birds alive. They can quickly take over your coop/birds.

First thing I'd do is raise the waterer off the ground with blocks, bricks, or by hanging from a chain or rope. It seems that about chest high on a chicken is a good height for a waterer. As previously posted, wet DE isn't going to help.

Yes that will work.
You will need to mix a small amount of this with water to spray every where.
Get the product and let me know the exact size of the spray bottle you plan to use and I will help you calculate the amount of permethrin to use.

But there are many excellent applications for de and I’ve used it for years .

@robinwhiskers please don’t take one person strong opinion as the only answer, I don’t use any pesticides or chemicals in my yard at all and I have lots of livestock .

Raise up your water so air can get under it , (2 bricks and a board ) dust with the de and it will dry up ,just like wet sand once it’s dry de is still effective .

Do your own research and don’t rush out to buy the recommended drugs

Also be careful if you use permetherin around the waterer... you don't want to actually get any in the drinking water. If you go this route, remove all food and water containers, treat in the evening, then replace the food and water in the morning when things have settled down.

That’s right , remove everything!!
And this is exactly why I don’t use these products , even the cleaning products I use in my coop and dog kennels are safe for the animals while being effective in many ways . Vircon for example is the product my vet clinic uses to clean even the operating room , but it’s safe for human /animal consumption.

Doing this in an environmental friendly way is possible with a little research .
