So a few days ago I saw a bug climbing on one of the younger chickens. From what I could tell the other girls had them as well. It wasn't small like an ant or bigger like a small beetle, but more like a type of lice. I didn't get a good look at it but my parents had me put diatomaceous earth down in their run and bedding. I would have to check tomorrow and will send pictures but I didn't want to leave it too late because I want to figure out what these bug-things are. The girls(and boy) act fine - like a pullet(Cockrel) should - running, eating, getting excited over worms and weeds. They sleep in the coop, their bedding being straw. I'm not sure if I should be looking for anything outside the coop? They are typically moved every 4 or 5 days due to them scratching the ground up and eating all the grass and such. I will definitely send photos in the morning and will check if the chickens have them anymore. If I had to describe the bug I would say it looked like a teardrop shape, about 1 maybe 1.5 millimeters in size. It had 6(maybe 4) spindly legs, 4 on the sides, 2 on the very front. I haven't been out in a while(except to feed them) because I have been busy with finals, but that is probably the best description I can give at the moment. Like I said, photos are on the way. Any help would be absolutely appreciated and I hope you can help in any way you can(to be honest, I half expect them all to drop dead on a dime) and have happy travels! :frow

Mites are tiny, you can't really see legs, and lice leave egg clusters at the base of feathers. There's lots of bugs in the world. DE does nothing for external parasites and is a respiratory irritant, as well as killing all kinds of bugs, good and bad. If your birds need treatment using a pyrethrin based poultry dust or spray is best. Most chickens control external parasites by dust bathing, so always provide an area for one.

Ok, I've been monitoring it for the past few days and I've determined that I am a paranoid chicken mom  It was nothing more than a pesky bug (thankfully). Today we did a deep scrub of the young chicken's coop and tomorrow we will be attempting to do the older chickens(the only problem being that the entire coop cracked when we tried to move it, so we'll have to see what happens). Thanks for your help(even if it wasn't anything, better safe then sorry) and have a good evening!
Happy travels! :frow
