I just found brown mites on the floor of my chicken coop so am assuming they all have mites. What should use on the coop and the chickens? and is there any mite killing product that i should stay away from because the baby's are due to hatch in 2 weeks. The coop is wood with dirt floors. Thank you for any information.

hold chickens by the feet and sevum dust them. also apply sevum dust in your coop. i had this problem earlier this spring and was grossed out. i just cleaned my coop and dusted the roosts just for precaution and applied a little in the fresh bedding. another thing you can do is apply pet flea /lice spray around their vents and than dust them, this will knock this problem out extremely fast, and WILL NOT harm your birds at all.

Ok thanks. Can i put seven dust on the eggs that she is sitting on to make sure that the mites don't get on the chicks when they hatch?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 for mites would use poultry dust / something like Sevin, I would powder her and take the eggs out of the nest and replace the bedding and dust the nest area and the area around it. Redust her and the area in 10 days and maybe a third time, I wouldn't dust the eggs or the chicks if they have hatched but keep an eye on them and do them next round if you need to when they are older. You also need to treat the rest of your coop and birds also.
For doing the nest, I would do it at night and as fast and quietly as you can, take her, dust her and and put her in an dark box/ crate (would not put the eggs with her, for the few minutes it should take you to dust everything they should be fine, take out the old bedding, dust the box, then put in new bedding and the eggs back in then mama, might want to block mama in for a little while if she is spooky, but most won't do much of anything as long as it is dark.

I dust my broodys in the nest , no later than day 12. Broodys are very susceptible to lice because of their limited outings to the dust bath. If for some reason I don't get it done before then I will leave it till the chicks are about a month old and then dust everyone. The dust burns my eyes when I use it so I can only imagine how a little chick would feel breathing it in whilst under momma.
Lice and mites can have a detrimental effect on youngsters so naturally I would be forced to treat them earlier if need be.

Does anyone know if i can mix sevin dust with water and use a sprayer to spray it?

The easiest way to get Sevin on a bird is to put it in a dispenser like a baby powder container or even a powdered sugar dispenser. Blow the feathers back or lightly pull them back and dust. Try not to damage the feathers, but really work it into the skin. I wouldn't add Sevin to water as it may deactivate it or something.

You can also use permethrin spray. You can get this in the parrot section of pet stores. This is really easy to use. Same thing...pull the feathers back or blow them back and spray the bird.

You will need to repeat this in a couple days and really clean out the coop and nest boxes well. Get every crack of the nest boxes and roost bars on top and underneath, floors ect... and replace all bedding.
