We have had these twice on our chickens. The first round killed a lot of our flock.
We dusted each chicken, treated for mites and lice. Bought two new coops and started over, we thought.
Unfortunately, two of our chickens died, which made us start checking the others this week.
Two of our chickens have these back again.
Can anyone advise what they are, and how we get rid of them, and prevent them from coming back.
Thank you so much

Those would be lice, so sorry about your flock :( only time my birds have ever had them is when brooding and powder wiped em out. But if its killing your birds its most likely the coop or area is completely infected, i advise moving your birds to a solid ground area cement, green cut grass etc so the lice cant hide in the dirt, clean and treat all birds, and possibly give them some garlic in thier food and water, certain things like that will make thier blood unappetizing, bleach and clean the coops throughly and do check ups daily to make sure the numbers are diminishing if the birds are still infested contact a vet about a way to treat them for the lice and isolate them from outside is what id say. Hope they make it through :)

Looks like lice.

Treat with Permethrin based poultry dust or spray, clean out your coop and treat it as well. Treatment and cleaning out needs to be repeated in 7-10days to kill off any that have hatched. (Some people repeat treatment/clean out 2x after initial treatment).

I'm sorry to hear you lost 2 chickens. A heavy infestation can weaken them. If after you treat/rid yourself of the critters and you have any other losses in a short period of time, it may be a good idea to have some testing performed to rule out any disease or underlying illnesses.

Give them a boost with some poultry vitamins a couple of days a week and a treat of some chopped beef liver (very small amount) over the course of a week.

Hope all goes well, keep us posted.

Sorry for your losses. Great pictures of lice. Permethrin spray and dust are what I use.
