Ugh, the litte f***ers are back!! Either I didn't do a thorough enough job getting rid of them in the first place, OR I didn't get rid of every last one because they have come back with a vengeance! So here is the game plan this time:
My old hen, Silver has them the worst. They have set up camp around her vent and started laying their little white egg clusters on her feathers (the poor thing) I pulled some of the worst clumps clean out, and then sprayed her bum with permethrin solution.
I found them on my Leghorn too, so I sprayed her bum as well, the others don't seem to have them, or at least don't seem to have as many so I have held off spraying them directly anyways.
I cleaned out all their bedding AGAIN, and washed out the coop with vinegar....then sprayed the whole place down with permethrin solution. Then I put in fresh bedding and dusted it with a pest control powder that I got from my local feed store. They recommend it for getting mite infestations under control...it's a combination of DE and permethrin powder.
Lastly, I filled their dust pits with DE and put them on vitamin water to help keep their little immune systems strong while this little war is waged....
Did I miss anything? What other advice do you guys have on managing mite infestations?
