if you dust everything with DE it will kill them all within 3-4hrs.. i have a dust bath for my chickens its a mix of DE and sand.. the coop gets dusted once every other month..and we are 100% mite free. . also works great on Fleas and Ticks.. just don't touch newspaper after its your hands cause it feels nasty..LOL

I have tried DE in the past, even put live mites/lice in a ziplock bag with DE.... it has never killed them. Only thing that I have found to work is Sevin or Poultry dust and I do put it in the outdoor dusting areas the birds create for themselves. Just add more every so often when the area is nice and dry.

I tried DE on my chickens when they had lice... covered them it it, put it all over their coop and in their dusting areas outside the coop, but still had lice several days later.

Now I use a dust with permethrin.

Mites live in the coop and come out at night. You need to treat the coop.

They do not have a coop, all free rage they sleep on the decks and silo/ roof of the barn.

Peafowl also get lice that for some reason like to live in their ears. Grab a bird and look very closely in their ears... they are quite small, like much smaller than the lice I see on my chickens, so I find putting on reading glasses helps me see them better. Next time I see them on one of mine I will try to get some pictures.

Mites don't live in just coops, they can found any place that birds sleep, including decks, silos, roofs, bushes and trees.

That's exactly how I do it!

Mites don't live in just coops, they can found any place that birds sleep, including decks, silos, roofs, bushes and trees.

Use spinosad or permectrum spray to soak the wood. You can at least lessn the mites that way.
