Mites

I'm hoping too. I'm so desperate I will do anything. The weather in Canada have change now. I have to get rid of the mites before fall/autumn. Temperature is cool and been raining the past 2days.

If you can get the Elector PSP (it is expensive) there- it can be sprayed everywhere and will eliminate the mites. It does take 2-3 days to get every last one of them, but can be done in one treatment. A little bit goes a LONG way. My friend had her broodies and chicks in a stall in their cow barn and they got infested. Horribly. Infested. The walls were the individual boards with grooves (that stack into each other) so lots of places for the mites to crawl and hide during the day. She used it and after 2 days the problem was ended and did not return.

I don't know if Valley Vet ships to Canada but here's the website (they are the lowest price here, but there might be a better option for you taking into account shipping expenses) with the bird-specific instructions.

I don’t know if I should even bring this up but since you are wanting to try what you can get your hands on easily while you wait... you might want to try laying some barn lime down under their bedding-I use wood shavings in MS. Deep litter method and then put a little DE on top not a lot and I use stall fresh -zeolite crystals-In the coop only to keep smell and flies down. There was a very lengthy thread about barn lime and DE the other night. It went around the world about the toxicity and opinions on DE but I use it in small amounts food grade as needed especially in dust baths for mite prevention or fire ant problems in the run. I learned I can use permethrin and pyrethrum in the run for them now. They are always bad but this year has been horrible. Be glad you have not been in FL. Awful!!! So you might want to try the barn lime. It’s cheap and an employee at our local TSC who keeps and raises chickens is who told me to start using it for the mites. She didn’t have any commission or anything else to gain by telling me to use it. Good luck to you Snowbirds!😊

I have had some success using wood ash for mites. In their dust bath and under the bedding of their coop. If you spray the whole coop down with soapy water you will have to repeat every week. Do you have horse fly spray in Canada?

While waiting for my permethrin to arrive I power washed the coop and sprayed Malathion 50% yesterday. I also sprayed the chicken. Is there a egg withdrawal?

No egg withdrawal period with permethrin.
