Mites

Be careful with ivermectin because it is VERY easy to overdose chickens. Have you tried using dust in the coop? You can get one of those puffer things (try searching Amazon for bug powder duster), lock the chickens out, and go to town on all the cracks and crevices. The dust will get EVERYWHERE vs a spray, including your lungs, so please protect yourself!
OK, I agree with you about the ivermectin. I have 20 pounds of food grade diatomaceous earth. I’m gonna purchase a puffer and give that a try. I would so much more rather do that than trying to spray the ceiling and all that stuff raining down on. I’ll let you know how it goes. Plus the sprayer depressurize is so fast and I have to constantly pump it up. Thank you so much.

You need permethrine based powder, not D.E.
D.e will more work and will cause respiratory issues in your birds.

If you can get permethrin dust (the same stuff you'd treat chickens with), that would be even better. I know a lot of people like diatomaceous earth, but I'm personally not a fan. The same mechanism that kills bugs is also hard on your chickens' lung tissue.

Can you post any pictures of the chicken’s bottoms in case of feather picking or broken off feathers. I have used BluKote on red skin to discourage pecking. My polish hens’ head feathers would be pecked, but BluKote stopped it if started early. Mites in a coop are a nightmare, since they can hide in the cracks and crevices at night. Some mites are on them night and day. Permethrin is good, and I like to use Martins or Gordons permethrin 10 concentrate diluted in water 1 tsp per quart of water. Use a spray bottle or garden sprayer for the coop. Prozap garden dust permethrin may be more tolerated, filling a sock to dust your chickens. Mites hatch every 5-7 days, so start treating every 7 days. Consider pressure washing your coop, and then spraying it with the permethrin. Some people have been so desperate with mites, they have heat teeated the coop or switched to a plastic coop. I have used permethrin for lice, but not mites. Repeat treatment and consistency is key. Straw is something they can hide in or be brought into a coop on, so I would avoid using that for bedding. Good luck on treating them. Consider Elector PSP or talk to your vet if permethrin doesn’t help.
I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I heard about the elector PSP and that it’s really effective. OK, I’ll start treating them every seven days. I know the solution for inside the coop is much different than for spraying the kids. I can’t dip the ducks because they’re so buoyant so I have to hold them in my lap and spray them and then for my goose I just pin her down and try to get the nozzle in up against her skin, which is challenging because of that thick down. Later today, I’ll get a picture of one of my roosters and post it here. Yes and the blue coat works fantastic for pecking and small wounds. I was afraid to pressure wash my coop as I didn’t want mold form, but I guess in this summertime it’s the best time to do it. Thank you for the tip about the straw. I generally use pine shavings and very fine sawdust, but I’m keeping bedding to a bare minimum just barely coating the floor because I have to scrape it out every week to spray.
Is 1 teaspoon per quart for the spray for the birds or for inside the henhouse?

I did pretty good considering I was the only one holding him. I lay him on the ground, and he was a good boy. So all these pictures are from underneath up near his genitals up toward the base of his big fluffy tail. It actually doesn’t look as red as my other boy and then after I took the pictures, I re-sprayed him with blue kote nest I could.

The safe dosage of permethrin 10 for spraying the chickens is 1 tsp per quart or liter, or 4 tsp per gallon. Use 1/2 ounce or 15 ml of the diluted permethrin per chicken. For treating coops 1 and 1/3 ounces of permethrin concentrate to a gallon of water is the average mix. Just don’t get that mixed up with the topical dosage. Here is a link about treating the coop:

Prozap and Gardstar are the 2 common brands of permethrin garden dust found in most feed stores.
