Chapter 18

The herd of mares Sheftu was leading were lagging behind from exhaustion. The hot wind was slapping their faces, and sand was lodging in their half-closed eyes. The cloudless sky was burning blue and the scorching sun was merciless on their backs. There was desert on all sides, with a few dark jagged rocks peaking out between the dunes. Sheftu plodded stubornly onward, head down and tail drooping. Every muscle was aching in his body, so that he had just enough strength to lift one hoof then set it down, lift another then set it down....
"Sheftu!" A high whinny reached Sheftus' ears. He lifted his head, a grey arabian danced up to him.
"Welll, hello there" He knickered. She stopped by his side and fell in step with him. She's an arabian! I'm an part arabian....she's pure. With these thoughts he hated her for a bit, that she could hold that over him, even unknowingly.
"I, ah, have a question." She lifted her dished head, her starry eyes met his. He almost gasped, one was blue the other brown! What strange eyes! She's kinda a pretty gal though...
"Y-yes?" He was a little embarrased for staring at her eyes.
"Why did you steal us?"
"It was my assignment." Then, he suddenly felt he was too important with his stallion duties to bother with a mare. "I'm quite busy right now, as you can see."
She giggled. "Yes, quite busy walking in a desert?" She glanced out into the endless waste land to prove her point.
"No." He muttered, "The matters I'm thinking about are enough to make ten horses busy, so leave me alone."
"But," She gave him a testy glance "Youre only one horse and so you have to think ten times as hard. I understand. Very well then, all my questions will remain unasked. Back into a deep well of my sorrows which no one can fill. Even you, are too busy for me. A little ugly grey mare. That's ok, I'm used to it. But I expected more of you, the handsome Sheftu. Looks like your not all I thought, oh well! Life is full of dissapointments, isn't it?" With that, turned around, flicked her tail in his face and melted into the herd of mares.
Stupid mare! She's one of the worst. She thinks she can manipulate, me?! The big Sheftu...manipulated by a mare? Ha, no that is unfathomable. I shou - In the midst of these rantings he stopped, realizing that the other horses were trembling. Some were whispering in low, anxious voices.
"What's this?" Sheftu boomed.
None gave him so much as a glance. He looked in the direction they were, and he shook with fear. A big cloud of dust was billowing before them. And the stench of predator lurked in the air.

"Run!" He yelled, as the horses bolted toward the hills.
