I will write another one shortly.

Chapter 38

I started up the incline with all possible speed. My muscles were getting tired and starting to burn, my lungs were heaving and my sides were lathered with foam. I peered behind me to see if the men were following me; they stopped their horses for a rest and all of them were watching my in disbelief. I couldn't guess why they had this odd look on their faces, even the mare I yelled to earlier was frozen - almost in fear, but I couldn't really see at a distance like that, so I didn't draw any conclusion that there might be danger before me.
I studied the ground, carefully watching where I placed my hoof, one little slip could mean a broken leg. I picked my way through the rocks, closer and closer to my inevitable doom. I was a little nervous approaching the large rocks, as I had never been this close to them before and it gave me an odd feeling to do so. Suddenly, I stopped completely, unmindful of the horses and creatures behind me. In fact, I totally forgot my whole surroundings and what I was running from, because my sixth sense started bleeping, quietly at first but now a siren in my mind. I had felt this feeling before, and feeling it again made gave me waves of panic surging through my veins while the word predator, predator, predator rang in my head!
I glanced up at the top of the rock to see a yellow eyes gazing to mine. Cougar. Time seemed to freeze sit looked me over, silent and deadly, sizing me up for the kill. In that split second I looked it over, dread rushing into my soul as I screamed! It's sleek body was muscular and twitching, but suddenly it was transformed into a yowling terror! It sprang onto my back and I realized with dismay what a bad position I was in, in the middle of the rocks, cougar on my back, creatures behind me, and searing pain running up and down my spine! I bucked and twisted, but the devil of a thing still hung on with all it's might! I was nearly blinded with fear and pain, but I could get some sense of direction to understand that I was nearing the river…that gave me an idea; one of those last second plans that might just work. I reared but the needles in my back tightened and tore some skin off, which made more blood run down my sides and legs. I did all I could to head toward the roaring river, foot by foot, meter by meter. Every second was unimaginable pain and tears; I would never survive to see Alastair again, nor Agnes and the foal inside me would die along with my hopes and dreams. Why? On this beautiful November afternoon did I have to die? Fate drew it's line here, but it was only a line and hope had scissors. I reared one more time this time toppling backwards! The cougar loosened it's grip and started snarling. That gave me hope that I may yet reach the river!

Sorry it's short! Were decorating and I have to do the dishes.

Whew. Ok, our dumb internet has been down so I've been writing a really long chapter on the computer over the days.

Suddenly, I stopped completely, unmindful of the horses and creatures behind me. In fact, I totally forgot my whole surroundings and what I was running from, because my sixth sense started bleeping, quietly at first but now a siren in my mind. I reared one more time, this time toppling backwards! Rocks banged into my back but the cougar loosened it's grip and hissed. That gave me hope that I may yet reach the river!
` I rolled to my legs and sprang towards the river bank, but the cougar leapt onto my bleeding back AGAIN! I screamed and cried, how I hate this infernal pussy cat! I staggered to the river edge and I decided that if I was going to drown in the torrential foam then the wildcat would too. I flung myself over the edge of the cliff, the wildcat still on my back, I screamed as I slapped the water like a sack of potatoes, the wildcat following, yowling! I bobbed to the surface, a strong current was pushing me along, the river was deep in this part and I couldn't get a darn foothold anywhere. I was torn along, the wildcat roaring at my side, then suddenly the cat vanished into thin air. Where did that devil go? I quickly forgot about the wildcat because about thirty feet ahead were jagged, evil rocks sticking out of the river!
"Ahhhh!" I screamed, would this be the end of me? I felt a foot hold - wait my hoof just struck a rock..ouch! I was banged against the rock, I felt myself stiffen and lie flat in the water… now why am I lying flat..? Wait! It's only two inches deep! I sprang to my feet to discover a stretch of sand that the rocks were jutting out of. I was a lucky dog. I picked my way to the bank and took one last look at the river, I saw a the cougar floating facedown through the river - dead. I was very thankful I survived this crazy escapade…now where am I?
I looked around as I struggled up the bank, my back was bloody and oozing out fluid. Blood trickled down my legs and dripped onto the rocks as I stumbled up.
When I reached the top my eyes widened with horror! The creatures on the horses! I shot off the other direction, across the dry earth that cried for rain. My sense of direction told me I was heading towards their camp, Good, maybe i can save the filly I'm looking after..and maybe she can tell me where the herd went! That gave me courage to delve on. Ten minutes later I saw the stretch of pines and the edge drop down into the ravine; smoke wafted above the trees which meant the two creatures that turned back were there.
I quietly approached the edge of the ravine and peered to the other side. The filly looked disgusted with the creatures and very grumpy, the other two horses were grazing and chatting pleasantly, while the strange creatures were at the creek stripped to the skin splashing around. They certainly are strange creatures, I silently mused, But their horses don't seem afraid, and that poor filly! I'm supposed to take care of her, if I can't take care of her like my own sister, I truly would be selfish. Hmm… So I formed a plan. A plan that might not work…but it was a last minute one. And I really had to get away from my pursuers on horseback. I was pretty sure I lost them though, because I didn't hear them.
I trotted along the edge of the ravine for a quarter of mile till I reached a small place I could cross, I gathered my haunches and leapt over the tiny creek to the other side. I made my way up the grassy bank and sneaked over to a mound that was large enough to hide me. I could see that the creatures were still splashing and yelling. Their horses were still grazing nonchalantly. I jogged slowly up to the mound nearest to them and knickered.
"Hey guys,"
They raised their heads immediately and looked around, a bay gelding answered, "Who is it?"
"Me," I let my head poke around the mound. "I need some help,"
The mare's ears went back a little, "You were the one we were chasing, aren't you?"
"That's not important,"
"Your definitely the one we were chasing," The bay retorted.
"Oh, shut up, won't you?" The mare snapped, "Now, what do you want?"
"I need help…now were both horses, correct?" I pleadingly asked.
"Yes…."
"Then, since were the same kind you can help me."
The mare was quiet for a couple moments, "Before I make any sort of commitment, I have to ask you, are you a wild horse?"
"What do you mean 'wild'? I'm not a wild sort of animal, if that's what you mean."
"No, that's not what I mean..I mean, are you an animal that isn't kept by humans?"
Now that was a new word for me! "Humans? What are humans?"
The bay gelding snickered, "Those half naked wild animals splashing in the creek."
"Oh…" I started to connect the dots, "So the humans took you horses away?"
The mare sighed, "My mother was a wild horse. Unbound by ropes…free as the wind, beautiful as the sky. She loved to laugh and run - especially on a windy day, nothing could keep her spirit down. Till one day, these hideous animals chased her down and shot the stallion, took all the mares. She foaled me in captivity…and well, I've always wanted to meet a wild horse. So are you a wild horse? Free and unbound by ropes and humans?"
I realized this was a good thing for me and my plan, "Oh yes! I'm a wild horse, I wasn't born wild, but I escaped when I was young."
She lighted up, "You are!? What's your name? And where's your herd!? I want to meet the stallion!"
"I-I don't know where my herd is, but see that filly down there?"
"Yeah, we roped her early this morning," The bay snorted, "She's a devil of a girl, put up a long fight."
"Well I'm supposed to be watching after her - "
"Why?" The bay interrupted.
"She's getting to that you moron!" The mare stamped impatiently.
"Anyways, I'm supposed to be watching after her as I would my own daughter…but when I woke up this afternoon the herd was gone and you guys were here, she was tied up and I was panicking." It all came out in a rush, my stressful afternoon was hard on me, and I was afraid my foal inside of me was hurt. The cougar really had ripped me apart.
"Oh, I'm sorry," The mare replied, her eyes a little wide. "What's your name?"
"Mitty," I paused, "My name is Mitty."
"Mitty?" The bay scoffed, "For pity's sake, who was your mother to name you such a name?"
Those words stabbed like a silver dagger, they hit my most tender spots - my name, and my mother. I could feel so much emotion rising out of my heart and into my throat, that I opened my mouth and no sound came out. Waves of anger suddenly enveloped me, "You stupid, half-witted, doggone, horse!" I screamed, I lunged toward him and bit his neck with such ferocity that I surprised myself, but I didn't care! Those words hurt me so much. My screaming had aroused the humans out of the creek, dangit! The palomino mare watched quietly, but now she sprang into action, she cantered directly toward the humans darting in between them and nipping their shoulders.
Then she called back to me: "Hurry, Mitty and save your friend!"
The bay gelding was mad at me and wanted to fight, but his human had reached him now and slipped strange material over his head and a shiny thing into his mouth. I was dumbfounded, but despite my shock, I wheeled around towards the filly; my hindsight saw the four men and horses that were formerly chasing me coming towards the scene! Oh no! Their horses were galloping towards me, I had to do something fast! I did a thing I was pretty good at - running! I galloped with all speed towards the stark grey filly who was evidently annoyed. When I reached her she glared at me.
"What took you so long?" She hissed.
"I had to get help," I replied, observing the rope around her neck. I followed the rope to it's base which was a stake in the ground - I pawed at it, glancing nervously at the advancing humans. "Hurry, pull!"
She strained at the rope, her neck muscles flexing, but she just couldn't loosen from it. Suddenly, at my side, was the mare I was talking to. Without saying a word, she picked at the knot with her sharp teeth and it loosened, then she pulled on one of the loops and it slipped right off the filly's neck!
We hardly had time to exchange smiles, the humans were surrounding us. I realized for the first time that I probably wouldn't escape out of this one, but I ignored that possibility and glanced around; the humans slipped off their horses and advanced slowly with rope in hand, but on our other side was the creek…if we could clear that and scramble up the steep bank on the other side, we may yet get out. But we couldn't just turn around and jump six feet over rocks, someone would have to watch the others backs and keep the humans backed up and away, lest they nab us when our rumps are turned. There was no time to explain my plan to anyone.
I looked at the filly and nodded, then I yelled, "Jump!" She whipped around and jumped over to the other side in ten seconds while I pounced at the men and threatened to bite and kick, keeping them at bay. When I glanced back at her, she was looking at me with a look on her face that wrenched my heart. I knew that she didn't want to leave me, but she must. There was no hope for me.
"Go!" I called to her, "Go be free."
"I will!" Tears streamed down her face, then turning, she galloped off into the pines. I sighed and looked up at the sky, so blue and promising. Ropes encircled my neck and tightened, disheartened, I didn't even fight. All my will to live had been sucked out of me, suddenly something warm touched my side. I trembled, it was a touch I had never felt before, I whinnied with fury as I saw that it was a human hand touching me, and a human face looked into mine! I stopped and was entranced as I studied this face. I was used to long horse faces, but this face was round and sunburnt with freckles, brown hair and scared eyes. I sniffed a little closer and sensed that this human was male, frightened, young, and unsure. At first I was annoyed and didn't want a person touching me, so I snapped in his face and he scurried away with a yell, the others laughed. No one touched me after that, but I could feel his eyes on me all evening. I stood around, the only wild horse, the other tame horses were staked nearby grazing. While I was tied very tight around my neck to a stake that was unmovable. I couldn't reach my head down to graze and I couldn't get any water. My wounds from the cougar were starting to weep and burn, and my legs felt fatigued. On top of that, my pregnancy pains were kicking up again. Why, oh why? Am I going to forever be condemned of this harboring life, with no freedom, grass, or water? With strange faces and hands ever touching you? This is too much.
