Mitty - The horse story

Chapter 42

For the rest of that day I felt terrible. Not only were my pregnancy pains getting worse, but the weight of Lune being angry at me was almost too much to bear. I tried my best to smile and be happy - mostly because Agnes seemed so happy to see me and I didn't want to disappoint her in any way.
The stark grey filly hung around me all day, for she was only about six months old and I think she was craving a mother sort of figure. So I tried my best to be a worthy mentor of this complicated filly, her feelings were tricky, for Yaedda had only adopted her out of compassion and the filly didn't want someone else's pity.
For many days the herd stayed in the valley. Alastair didn't talk much, which was a little curious, because normally he was amiable and even joking with his mares…but now he would just observe us, only speaking when necessary, and in the shortest form possible.
One brisk afternoon I was grazing in the grass, immensely enjoying the peacefulness of the day - trying to put my troubles behind me for awhile. Till then, the filly was playing with some other young ones but now she stood silently beside me, brooding over an issue.
"Mitty?" The filly had been quiet for awhile, mulling over something; but I left her alone, for I had gained much experience in these days with her and I knew that if I pushed her into talking she would clam up even more. So letting her bring tup on her own was much better.
"Yes?" I replied, casually lifting my head up from the grass.
"I - I'm ready." Her voice was decisive.
"Ready for what?" I was mildly interested in this conversation, but most of my attention was diverted to a little mare fight. Two mares were fighting for dominance, surprisingly, it was Pearl and Cassidy! Pearl was an older mare who held high position in the herd. It wasn't completely unusual to see her fighting, she was always busy keeping the others in line. But what was surprising was that Cassidy, a bay mare of much lower rank, was fighting. If she was fighting at all it would have been strange, but here Cassidy was fighting with one of the lead mares, which was unexplainable!
Naturally, my attention was drawn to them.
"Mitty!" The filly snapped, "Why aren't you listening to me?"
I didn't appreciate her tone of voice, "Don't get sassy, and yes, I'm listening. What are you ready for?" Well, if she's ready for anything then it must be progress. Especially if it's between me and her.
"I'm ready - ready to…" She was hesitating, and averting her eyes.
"It's ok, you can tell me," I softened my tone a little, "What is it?"
"I'm ready to - " She took in a deep breath, "I'm ready to tell you my name."
Now this is progress! I smiled! "What's your name?"
"Abigail. My name is Abigail."
My heart leaped! She told me her name! "What a beautiful name, Abigail. Now I can stop calling you 'the filly'."
"Yes," Her eyes looked into mine, they shone with happiness and complete trust. It almost broke my heart to realize how much she must depend on me, here I was; too busy grumbling and being sad, when I had a miracle right here. And instead of viewing her as a hindrance, I started having a heart for her, and caring for her. I cared so much that I wanted to cry, I loved her!
