any idea what this chicken is? I know s/he isn't a full barred rock. So and guesses?
The hard thing about figuring this out is the barred parent has such strong genes they can hide a lot. Not only do they pass the barring on, but most of them are extended black, so you can breed them to a variety of color birds and end up with black offspring. Makes it hard to say what color the other parent was. I think I see some lacing...that usually lends itself to Wyandottes, but they have rose combs, which are dominant, and this chick has a straight comb. So, you can pretty much say the other parent had a straight comb and likely yellow legs, beyond that....hard to say. Also, consider it may be a mix of mixes...the barred parent may not have been pure itself.

A quick update on my "Mystery Mutt". I've posted some of her photos on here before, since shortly after she hatched. This is my bird who is not supposed to be able to be barred, but ... Her father is a mix breed that looks like a New Hampshire, or a Jubilee/Buff Orpington mix. Her possible moms are a Production Red and a Black Jersey Giant. She looks very similar to my Rhodebar pullets now, except they don't have the little bits of white.

Production Red is most like the mom. Everything that I mixed with my BJG's were black.

You're sure she doesn't have a rhodebar mom? She looks exactly like one.

I am positive. The only birds I had that were laying at the time were the two mentioned. Everything else in that pen was 3 months old or younger.

I have to check my records, but she may even be a little bit older than my Rhodebars. They are within one month of each other age wise.

Haha wow! Crazy!

Yeah, it's weird, based on everything I've read she shouldn't be able to be barred, general consensus when she was younger was that she wasn't truly barred and the pattern would fade with age, but so far that hasn't happened.

I plan to put her in a pen with one of the Rhodebar roosters and see what hatches out. I'll have to keep those eggs separated from my pure Rhodebars so there are no mistakes on who is who, but it would be crazy if she actually could produce autosexing chicks.

Some more of my barnyard mixes.

EE x Silkie Cockerel

EE x Silkie Pullet

?? Pullet - not sure who her parents are, probably my Production Red and mix breed Rooster as the father

Orpington (both parents are Buff x Jubilee Orp mixes) chasing the above bird. The Orp is showing some mottling on her wings, so some of the Jubilee markings are coming through.

Cockerel - Dad is ?? (mix breed who looks like a New Hampshire or an Orpington) and mom is my Cuckoo Maran

An "EE" Rooster. I was told he's an EE at least, he didn't develop any beard or muff. But he does have the green legs so hopefully he carries the genes for blue/green eggs.
