Mixed Flock Advice

I do have a Buckeye, a Dominique and three Wyandottes (Silver Laced, Golden Laced and Colombian.)

The Dom is my favorite and, like @Chickassan said, is extremely nosy. Mine knows no boundaries as everything is hers, including me.

My little Buckeye is very sweet and is next to last in the pecking order. Maybe it’s because she’s the cockerel’s favorite. :lau

My Wyandottes, well, they’re just there. They are all three in their own world. They don’t want anything to do with me. They truly want to be left alone.

All of these girls are excellent layers, but the Wyandottes are tops in this category.

They all have small combs and wattles. The Buckeye has no wattles. The cold will pose no problem for these breeds.

And they are all excellent foragers, except for my Dominique. She is too busy aggravating me and stealing my food. :gig

I can chime in on Dominiqes, they are super little chickens!
They forage like mad women so they eat less feed and they're SMART.
Heat and cold tolerant, little rose comb gets zero frostbite.
Excellent layers, lay all the way to molt and as soon as they're presentable they start back.
Nosy, always want to know what you're doing and if you have anything...btw they will TAKE anything you have whether it is for them or not.
Personality varies, I have two and they're night and day.
Hobo is my top hen, she rules with an iron beak. She is so terrifying my two year old Faverolles rooster has NEVER mated her.
Dutch is sweet, gets along with everyone and is one of the roo's favourite girls.
I'd reccomend, just for the entertainment factor alone. BTW my flock is so mixed it isn't even funny.:)View attachment 1664573Hobo. View attachment 1664575Dutch. View attachment 1664577The iron beak! ;) View attachment 1664579Cute little penguin baby Dutch.
Oh how fun! Thanks for the pictures! If i only had to choose one, it would be Dominiques. Or Buckeyes. Or Wyandottes. But trying not to have to choose!

How funny! Thanks for the excellent report. I feel so much better informed now, and at ease.

Lordy, do yours hone their beak on your pants and shoes constantly?
My two keep that sucker pristine, like they're ready to peck an army.:lau

Honestly, my Dom, Lena (named after my DH’s grandmother) could almost be considered borderline abusive to me. She is extremely smart, like you said, and knows how to get what she wants. She is small, but forceful. If I am holding another girl, in her presence, woe is me! She will continue to peck at my legs, pants, whatever she can until I put the other one down and pick her up. She is something else. That’s for sure.

My Dominique (Rosie) is the same way. She's so curious and talkative. She's always the first to perceive when I'm hiding some treats. She jumps up on me when I'm sitting in a chair. She talks and talks and talks and lays medium-sized eggs regularly. She was the last to molt this year (in Middle TN).

I also have a Gold Laced Wyandotte. I've read elsewhere that Wynadottes can be bossy, but mine is at the bottom of the pecking order since she was added last. She's pretty skittish and only occasionally crouches to be picked up — but all this might be more because of her circumstances than because of her breed. Have fun!
