Can't wait for this spring! Fencing in the backyard, building my own chicken coop- catawbacoops.com - and getting chickens for the first time! We're considering a mixed flock of strong layers. I also need birds that can be confined without much issue. We do have an oversized backyard, but they may be in the coop some due to us being right in town. I want friendly birds, as we have 2 young kids and a third on the way. And the weather here is more moderate although we can have the extremes. Also, I may be interested in showing a couple of my birds...we'll see. Anyways, my main question is what peoples thoughts are on my idea for the mixed flock- 2 barred rocks, and 2 light sussex, all hens. Would these birds be ok together?

They will do just fine. I would also recommend American Dominiques owing to their gentle disposition and they look similar to barred Plymouth Rocks although slightly smaller.
