Ok, I'm totally new to the idea of breeding for certain traits. I"m so curious tho, if it would be possible to first introduce a long fancy tail (like a phoenix's) to a sultan and then somehow (later down the lineage i'm assuming) throw in some frizzle feathers?

LOL

It would be the ultimate shrine of frou frou poultry : o

So is there any way something like this could work?
Thanks, and looking forward to your insights and opinions : )

of course it's possible, that's hoe breeds are created.

Work with dominant genes and always keep good records on which birds carries the reccessive traits.

Ok so I"m straining my feeble mind back to hs biology class rofl. How do you tell which traits are dominant and recessive? Is there a good, easy to understand guide somewhere I can look at that may help me understand how poultry genetics work a little more?

Thanks! : )

Very basic explination (because hey it's 3 AM and i'm falling back on Mendal)

you have a pea plant, it had long green pods (G), another had short yellow pods (g).

F1 cross:

You plant 4 of those seeds and 4 have green pods (Gg) The dominant color is green, the yellow gene is hidden, but still there.

F2 cross:

You plant 16 more seeds from the second generation, using statistics 25% are pure for the green trait (GG), 50% should be the green/yellow hybrid (Gg), and 25% would throw the recessive yellow color (gg).

Chickens are granted not peas, but that's the easiest way to cover basic dominant and recessiveness.

NZ, I'm not sure I understand why one would work only with dominant genes? If you have specific traits you want to introduce, you work with the trait, regardless of whether it is dominant or recessive. I do understand that working with dominant traits is simpler--if you have it, you see it, at least generally.

Rabidity, here is a good starter website: http://web.archive.org/web/20051207035940/marsa_sellers.tripod.com/geneticspages/page0.html
and
here is one that is a bit more advanced: http://www.edelras.nl/chickengenetics/

For
an excellent book, www.chickencolours.com

Humm, I went to the starter website and was doing well and then it moved too fast and I got all confused, lol. I am going to have to save it and study it more when I have time. Thanks.

Ummm, I guess I read more into your answer than you intended, lol. I thought you were speaking generally, when in actuality you were addressing specific traits.
