Mixing breeds

Can I mix breeds? I want 6 hens and it would be fun to have them all different breeds. Is this a bad idea? Or will they get along fine? Are there pros or cons to have same/different breeds?
I’m interested in Easter Eggers, Speckled Sussex, Australorp, Barred Rock and Buff Orpington

Nothing wrong with mixing breeds but some breeds are more compatible than others. It also depends on the breeds personality. Don’t mix Barred Plymouth Rocks with Salmon Faverolles as Faverolles are very docile and Plymouth Rocks are generally aggressive.

Pros: you have a mixed flock full of different colours and different eggs.

Cons: if you breed them the offspring will be mutts and they would be hard to sell.

Yes they should get along fine, but they’re chickens, there’s always going to be a pecking order

Great. We will not be breeding. My kids love the idea of all different hens and eggs thanks!

We have a mix of hens - cochins, barred rocks, australorps, easter eggers, sex links and an orpington. They all get along. There is a pecking order but no real issues.
