Mixing different breeds

First, I would keep 3, simply because they are such flock animals so any time you lose one from a flock of two, you will have one lonely, sad chicken. Black Australorp hold the world record for the most eggs, they are large eggs at least, and mine at least lay all winter even without added light. Any of the ones you mentioned usually are easy to make pets of.

its so easy to find my flock, I have a very large, 300 acres they can roam, although they don't go that far! Since I have a white chicken, I just have to look for her!

OH, maybe I said that wrong...egg production...not looking to breed or raise... meaning I'm only going to eat the eggs...not raise or eat the chickens. Backyard, home use only. I'm not a huge egg eater, I like 'em just fine, but I don't eat them very often. So it's basically for hubby to eat, I'll used the duck eggs to cook/bake with

I have a silkie and a silkie/cochin cross...they don't get picked on, they were raised together...what ever you decide, do it all at once...hard to integrate into the flock...

thank you for lettingmeknow this, as i said i dont have too much experience.

i wanted to add to my flock next year with polish or silkies but got told it may not bea good idea withthe BO beingso big.

i will read up more about it. thank you very much for theinfo its apreciated

I have a bunch od different breeds. My largest are Easter Eggers, which aren't really that large. My others are hamburg, silver leghorn, buttercup, Egyptian Fayoumi and old eglish bantam. I'm bringing along some production red chicks with my meat bird batch right now. The meat birds are in with the big chicks and surprisingly, even though they're huge, they get picked on, even though the smaller young one's don't. The old English bantams are the top of the entire pecking order!
So, size doesn't matter nearly as much as personality. My old English bantams are the sweetest pets but they keep everyone in line and are by far the top of the pecking order but no fighting.

Mixing breeds seems to be a fine thing to do. We have five chickens and five different breeds. No conflicts to report so far as 17.5 weeks. Our DOM in by far the most social, though her black and white counterpart (BR) is not far behind. The other three (wellie, BA, and EE) are good as well, just not as readily snuggly as the other two.

I can't comment on egg production just yet since none of them have laid.
