mixing pheasants

I have one thing to say....breed what you want to breed. If you want to breed mixes, fine then breed them. Don't sell them as pure breed though. I have no intention of selling ours that are not pure, but I don't see a problem with mixing them. As far as putting all breeds together for non-breeding season. I know at least one breeder here in my state that come winter, they house all their pheasants together (reeves included) and they've never had a problem. It's a shame that some people sell mixed breeds as pure, but that's why you buy from someone you've had experience with or you know for a fact that it's pure.

Exactly!!
About 80% of them or better, already are on the endangered species list most of the others are on the Critically Threatened list.
This is not a domestic family of birds, and thus should not be treated like they are. As for the guy keeping them ALL together in the winter, that's crazy! He's either VERY lucky, or nutts, or just both. None of my Reeves have ever cared what season it is, as well as many other species. To be exact about it, many breeds can only be kept as pairs too, cause the hens will kill each other . It's not always the males that are aggressive.
These are not and should not be treated like domestic fowl, PERIOD, cause there is nothing about them similar to any domestic bird with regards to caring for and PROPERLY keeping them.
As for mixing, With the ones that are Endangered, which are most like I said, It should be illegal to intentionally mix breed them under the U.S.D.I. Endangered Species Act. Hopefully it is....

That's why there are people like you guys who don't mix breeds. We have no intention of selling ours, therefore no one will see anything from them but ourselves. Not everyone has to have the same views and that doesn't make us bad people. We do not buy from breeders, we buy from private sellers because we do not truely care how "perfect" our birds are. As far as making it illegal to mix breed, that's like saying two different nationalities can't marry or have kids together. I don't see why people have a problem with what I do on my own when I do not intend to include anyone else in the mix. Now if I wanted to start selling them and call them pure, in order to dilute someones pure stock, yeah that would be a problem, but I'm not.

To be exact about it, many breeds can only be kept as pairs too, cause the hens will kill each other . It's not always the males that are aggressive.

MMMM , I didn't think a trio of pheasants would be that bad , I figured 1 male to 2 female would be better so that the male would give one a break while he chases or mates with the other .......

so what breeds can be house as trio's -with the following pheasants ;

Red
Yellow
Lady Amherst
Reeves Pheasants
Silvers Pheasants
Ring Tail Pheasants

Yes Alan, those are fine with multipe hens, peacock pheasants, tragopans, eareds, stuff like that are all best as pairs

That's just a crazy comparison there. These are Federally protected, ENDANGERED SPECIES!! Big difference over what you are comparring them to. I'm not talking ring neck, and goldens here. I talking about all the others. Not saying to make it that way, saying I think it already is! To intentionally do it that is. The hole point in captive breeding of Endangered species is to preserve them like Tony said for future geneerations and survival of the species, not our personal creative desires. Still just not getting it are we, these aint chickens!​

that’s what I was kind of thinking the more exotic type of Pheasants need a 1 to 1 ratio - but I just wanted to make a good note of it in my note book , what about with the follow list is it best to have more hens like 3 or 4 to one male .

An a another note, it seems that you and Tony seem to know ur Sh%$# about the in’s and outs about breeding/ raising pheasants,so I know and have read from the both of you and some others about raising and run size , they food and diet , but it seems to me that most place there pheasant in say a 6 - 8 ‘ wide by 10 -12’ long pen /run
But with some of the pictures posted on here from others , it seems that most pheasants spend most of the time running up and down the fence line’s and really don’t use the middle part of there runs that much , so would it be best to make the runs /pen size longer and short up on the width size say like 4-6 ‘ width by 14-18’ long would that make more cents............. just seem like a waste of space ..............................
