mixing pheasants

You're right, perhaps I over simplified the first reply. The ORIGINAL one is one of those ups, where did that come from deals. Aside from that, then it's years and years of select breeding to PERFECT that color mutation and establish a true breeding popluation of them.

As for the pheasant verses peafowl (spaulding) deal. You are dead on there. I dont like either to be honest. The spaulding crosses are what is deteriorating the current US population of Green peafowl. So many people have spualiding and either dont know what they have, or just want the better money for greens? But they are selling spauldings as GREEN peafowl calling them 1 of the 3 subspecies. I dont care how many generations you put back into them, once they are spualdings, they will always be just high percentage spauldings. Case in point here. I have a few spauldings, and every stinking one of them was an atempt to pass them off to me as Javas, Burmese, or Imerators. I have also seen numerous post over the years on here and other forums, of people posting pics of their Javas, when it's obvious they are spauldings, these are usually the ones who didnt know and were the recipients of those off birds. So I for one dont like it in either due to that.

I believe the reason most pheasant breeders dont like it with them is for several reasons.
1) Same as above with the peafowl
2) So many of them are on the Critical or Endangered species list, that it is solely detrimental to the survival of the species.
3) Peafowl only come in 4 species in captivity, so mutation and crosses to mutation are the only way to get more color patterns, yet in the pheasant world, there are loads of different species already available that are just gorgeous in the natural form, so why mess with it.

4) Unlike domestic poultry, they are in nature, a wild species (both accounts) and shouldnt be messed with genetically
5) once crossed, that bird or any of it prodigy will never be anything but a mutt, and it can never be taken back to it's true pure to breed form.

These are just what I believe is the rationalizations behind it. and Like I said, I really dont like it in either species.
But, If someone were to want to do it, it's totally up to them, however, please stay with the more readily available species like the ruffed, never do this to stuff like peacock pheasants, tragopans, eared, longtails, etc, they need or captive protection and care for their survival..

Here is a photo i took today of my Golden Amherst mix i think.
I bought it last year at a fair unknowing what it was at the time.

I would not breed it, but what i want to know is this.

Would it be better for this bird to be able to have his way with another female be it a golden or amherst just to keep him calm during breeding season and wouldnt it be fair to let him have some pleasure.

Excuse the pun. But i dont think he should miss out on whats natural at this time of year.

Any eggs need not be hatched but discarded.

As long as you plan on keeping him with a hen golden or amherst doesn't matter.I would boil their eggs crush them up and feed it to them. All birds love hard boiled egg,but you need to crush it up so they can't tell what it is and so they don't try eating the eggs in their pen.

its a cool looking bird, theirs no denying that, and if you have a spare hen I'm sure he'd appreciate it. Just don't let em hatch.

When I see; well anything that catches mine eye I ponder the pluses, and minuses of the acquisition. You seem to have thought these out and know what you want. That being the best way to start. Rushing out and buying is what you do before you think. You have already thought so you would not be rushing. One reason I purchase rather suddenly after planning something out is that I may not in the future be able to get it. Call it targets of opportunity. If however it is not available then I wait. There is a definite advantage to purchasing from this breeder. One: Years of development time are already accomplished. Two: The breeder takes pride in his/her stock. 3: Should you decide to develop the stock further you will be in an excellent position to do so. Go for it. Do not worry about what naysayers think. I only try to emphasize responsible forethought other than that the sky is the limit. A similar question to yours popped up last year and the one asking the question was browbeat into submission by intolerance to the point that person thought it was wrong to create/raise hybrids. It is not. I was disappointed not by criticism itself, but constructive criticism to the point that it knocked the person down. Taking away someones dreams is the pinnacle of cruelty for that is all that they truly own.

As an amateur enthusiast I though the birds that I "created by mixing were cool. After some thought and study and self evaluation I realized what I was doing. It wasn't like I was working with chickens, where domestic fowl are bred and bred to create a possible new breed with enhanced characteristics. I was taking one of Gods original creations and helping to destroy it by whiping out true bloodlines. IT already has been mentioned in this thread that once you contaminate abloodline, it is gone. As a breeder that strives to perpetuate the species, I am appalled at all the backyard breeders that sell their stock as pure.

I agree with kikescove. Thats the problem one bird, just one bird and purity is gone... forever.

( and thats why we see the problems all over ) trust me I see frankenbirds here like adrianos. yes they are pretty but dont want to see the purebloods gone.and like it or not thats whats happening . btw I bought 2 red golden hens 2 yrs ago for a lot more than could have got locally just because I knew the guy cared about pure strain birds. IF only everyone would DO as adriano does it would be great! but really he is an exception not the rule. dont want to argue just my opinion
