Sandy's going to have another checkup

Saturday morning 9.20, Sandy will be poking her beautiful little noggin up out of the travel basket to say hi to Dr Hill. I think most peole who read about the little flock know that she's just not thriving like we all want her to, although today...

Today was a special day. I've been away from home on a work trip, which means the hens had a whole day (and a half) confined to the henhouse. That means I've been feeling like a poor excuse for a chickeneer. Anyway, to make up for any additional tension I may have been obliged to inflict, this morning I made a wet breakfast for the hens. That means two types of normal layers food, mixed up, with some water added. As I left for the office this morning, Sandy was tucking in to the wet breakfast while Janet and Mary commandeered the one lettuce leaf I had thrown in as a special treat.

It's hours and hours later and I've just arrived home from a long day of responsibility to discover Sandy looking unexpectedly rather healthy!

So now I've got yet another Sandy hypothesis: her snipped off beak means she can't eat hard food as easily as wet food.

So I'll continue with the wet breakfast for the time being and I'll discuss all of my Sandy hypotheses with Dr Hill on Saturday morning.

In addition to giving Sandy another health check, he will do follow up flotation tests for all the hens to see if the worm population has decreased since the worming. I hope so, because the hens have lost all trust in their water dispenser since it turned on them and decided to provide worming water instead of normal water. The fact that it's been emptied out, washed, and refilled many times since, while the hens were watching, has done nothing to appease their concerns.
