MJ's little flock

Mary didn't have a chance to get into broody mode today because they were all confined to the henhouse while I was at a Christmas function and she's not keen on the nest in the henhouse. She prefers the nest in the prefab or the nest in the yard. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

I sort of like it when she's broody because it's a chance for me to stroke her, which is normally out of the question entirely. Maybe this time she won't be as snappy and I won't need the gloves.

Late Feb is should be starting to cool off again...???
I think it will be hot in March too. It's usually hot in march, but not as utterly scorching.

What I'll do is relocate the prefab to the other side of the yard, where it will have morning shade. In the mornings, the big girls can use the yard and go back in their house at lunchtime with the misting if it's too hot. Then the little girls can use the yard in the afternoon, and sit near the misting if they want to.

If this arrangement doesn't work, I'll extend the misting to encompass the prefab.

Plus all the usual treats for hot days like iced water and frozen snacks.

That's the best sort of breeder. They'll give hints & tips & are super helpful. :)
She's been amazing! I'm wondering whether I ought to pick them up sooner while they're still little babies and keep them in a tub in the back room with a desk light. Trouble is, I don't know anything about raising chicks.

A little while ago I was talking with someone I know. We are at opposite spectrum's on just about any topic one cares to pick. Surprisingly, we got to talking about chickens. I was talking about a rooster that died many years ago. I had to work my way through the tribes history which involved recalling each individual, who was related to who, how old they were etc. I can recall over 100 chickens and yes it's probably very dull to listen to.
This person asked me if I didn't have anything better to keep in my head.
I answered, no.

That is outstanding. I remember each of ours. I think the point that others who dont know chickens should take from that is how unique each chicken life is. Their personalities, their relationships, and the arch of their lives. They are not just little egg machines.

That was one of the best parts of Maleficent being broody. I could pet her fluffiness whenever I wanted. She was sooo fluffy too. :D

They will be fine but it is smart to plan ahead. Shade is a good idea to beat the heat. Can you add a fan if necessary? I put a fan in my coop in the summer.
