MJ's little flock

I am interested to know where your girls spent their night... :D

My lord that is hot. Where did they sleep last night?

In the bathroom. It wasn't ideal and they're sad this morning, but until the backyard jacaranda has grown up, it's just too hot for Mary outside during heatwaves. She was very fatigued by the heat on the first day.

Today's forecast is 45 again, with a cool change late afternoon so they'll be outside tonight for sure.

They're settled in to the bathroom, eating and drinking, Janet laid an egg, but it's not a great space for them with no dust bath, no roost and little space.

I can't wait to put them back outside later. They'll be so happy.

The only positive is that I can gear them all day long, talking gently to one another.

I love the sound of soft chicken talk. My layer flock is under and outside of my kitchen and I just love sitting there listening to them. I even talk back to them!!:lau Rich thinks I'm nuts...:idunno

They make the most beautiful noises :)

Since my last update, I could hear Janet scratching in an attempt to make a nest, so I put some straw in a copper drum and turned it on its side. She's in there now, making it comfy. Usually it holds the firewood in the living room, but not today :)

So glad I put those old sheets down - so much poop!

Deep shade is just the thing for hens in summer.
It's what saves the chickens here. There are a few cool spots and the chickens know them all.
The best shade here is high tree cover with large shrubs, herbs and bushes. It's much better than anything man made apart perhaps what some of the Moroccans I know use.
They make a large clay dome and put 4 or more entrance/exit holes in them so they catch any breeze. On top of this they suspend a mat made of rushes. The dome stays relatively cool and the shelter costs next to nothing.
It's a bit like dense bushes in that air circulates between the mat and the roof of the dome.

I lie on my bed some days in the mid summer and the chickens know my house is cool and turn up after morning forage. Listening to them chat is one of my favorite past times.
I must mention though, when the roosters crow it is pretty loud in the house.:)
