MJ's little flock

Yes. To me it looks like that sort of eye.

She was my favourite because she allowed me pet her while the other two were having none of it.

A few weeks after this photo she got coccidiosis and pulled through, only to have her head bitten off in the fox raid a few days later. They left her body and head behind and took Alice and Nigella back to their den.

I spent about 18 months getting over it then sorting out a fox-proof coop before I brought first Janet then Mary to live here, followed by Sandy (who needed a home) some time later. The rest you already know.

Dora's remains are buried under the fox proof coop.
Thanks for sharing her photo and story with us. :hugs

I'm working beside the nest box again and I can hear things going on in there. Compared to yesterday, there's less chittering to the eggs, more rustling in the straw.

It was. I gave myself time to get over it and loved ones gave me the support I needed to continue going with chickens. I still recall Nigel saying "for you, I'd recommend trying again but with a better coop," then he went through all the different coops with me over a few months, and finally helped me pick up the new coop from the manufacturer and bring it home. It was a flat pack with rather confusing instructions, but I assembled it over a few weekends and only made one mistake. That coop has kept the hens safe ever since. So far (touch wood) it really has been fox-proof.
