And I trust myself with the hens more than I used to.

Was that to keep everyone, maybe mostly Mary, calm? And she was fine to have everyone leave without her? Did they want to stay with her?

The hens here prefer to stick together and will panic if I try to separate one from the others. Whereas doing things in a team causes almost no concern if it's done quietly. Once she was in the tub, she had water to think about. With the shower curtains drawn, she couldn't see me herding her friends out. I could've left them in the bathroom with her, but they'd have distracted me and my goal was to get her cleaned up safely and back to her normal life asap. They seemed happy to leave her to her fate and just as happy to see her again.

I'll add the water was warm and not very deep. It was high enough to touch her poop clods but not as high as her cloaca.

And one more detail: it was a warm day with lots of time for her to dry off before the temperature started to fall.

She spent a lot of time putting her feathers back to rights after her bath.

It was a funny day!

Thanks, I bought the coop as a flatpack from a local vendor. It's an aluminium frame with a mini orb roof, and mini orb + welded wire panel walls. It also has a fox proof floor.

But it's a little too small to house the hens 24/7 without losing their joy, so they only use it as a bedroom. They have a big run for most of the day and they're let out to run the backyard for a few hours each day.
