MJ's little flock

It's going to be a hot day. 39C. The hens are roaming the backyard and the run is open, so they can follow the shade. A hose is dripping under a shady tree on opposite sides on the backyard. There's fresh water in ceramic water jars in both those shady spots. And I'm wfh today to keep an eye on them.

It's only one hot day. Tomorrow's forecast is much cooler.

Again last night Edie and Katie slept on the roost. Edie's poops have returned to normal but Katie's are splatty and have a lot of undigested pickings. I hope she starts eating normally soon.

The hens did extremely well in the heat. They didn't even start panting.

However, I'm glad tomorrow will be cooler.

There's a very cool wind blowing after the hot day and it sharpened the hens' appetites before roosting.

In particular, Janet absolutely stuffed herself. She ate non-stop for about 40 minutes! I'm thrilled

That hen seems to thrive in the heat.

That hen seems to thrive in the heat.

Impressive! Most of the chickens here don't do well at all in the heat. Especially the bigger ones and the feathered legs. However I think they are ok when it's just one day- it's more when it lasts that they seem really unhappy.

The dripping hoses provide evaporative airconditioning, which is lovely for all the hens.

Mary doesn't like hot days, so she spent almost all her time sitting in the shade or drinking fresh water.

Ivy had to lay her egg and she heated up considerably in the little coop's nest box. There are cooler nests available but nest preferences are strong. Ivy cooled off quickly once she was back in the dripping hose airconditioning and had something to drink.

The other five hens were absolutely fine.

Hi friends. I hope MJ doesn’t mind, but I just wanted to share something I achieved today. It’s been two years in the making but I was awarded my black belt in Jishukan today. There’s been blood, sweat and tears (and more than a little bruising) but today I earned the title ‘Shodan’.
