MJ's little flock

Improved roost?

While the coop was empty, I took the opportunity to make and install new roosting bars. The new ones are wider, deeper, and much sturdier.

That's the old one on top for comparison.

I love your mesh floor. I am also always looking to improve thing as well everytime I do a deep clean. Next time it will be roost lowering. Hattie has stopped using the the step I built for her but I still don't like the thump she makes when getting off the roost. It seems too high.

That floor is how I sleep at night. There are so many foxes around my neighbourhood, I need to know the hens are safe at night.
I like your idea of lowering the roost for Hattie :) she'll say "ooo, that was easier than yesterday! Look out world, here I am!"
My next coop improvement will be another feeding station - with Janet's bad attitude we can't have too many.
They seemed to approve of the sturdy roost and Marry settled herself on the section I cushioned with bicycle inner tubes. I'll have to ask my uncle for a few more (he's an enthusiastic cyclist) so I can make more cushiony spots.

Can you take a picture of the inner tube roost? That sounds like it might be nice for them.

The inner tubes were very narrow. I made two cuts either side of the valve and threw the valve away. So I had two long tubes, open at both ends. Then I wrapped them around the roost and secured them with cable ties. The tubes didn't go very far, but they were very narrow to start with.
