MJ's little flock

Back to teaching - when I was a kid (okay so none of you were born yet), I was surprised at how easy it was to learn spelling if the word(s) were in a song.

On the ancient "Mickey Mouse Club," They used to sing EN Cy Clo Ped IA as a teaching aid. I have never forgotten the spelling because I can hear the song in my head.

Earlier than that a commercial used to sing about B-O-S-C-O. It was a chocolate syrup to add to milk. They would mention the name a few times and the brain was all set.

Also in kid's games they would sing about B I N G O- about a big dog.

Sandy update

Today Sandy had her third injection of Clavulox - not sure if I've remembered the name correctly. She's beginning to distrust the travel basket, so today I'm going to put water melon in it for the hens to find and enjoy. However, this morning as we were returning from the vet clinic, I decided to open one side of the basket so she could see out as we drove along. It was a bit risky but there was very little traffic and I was ready to pull over if a panic erupted. It didn't. She said. "Wow!" and looked around with a lot of interest. She didn't bother getting out of the basket, she just sat there with her head up, taking it all in. Tomorrow I'll open it up sooner and take a photo :D

Two jabs to go. She's looking much better, but still using her pain posture a few times a day. Her comb and wattles are a lovely shade of red.

Since I sprayed for mites (that was Saturday evening while they were on the roost) there's been much less grooming and scratching, so I'm pleased with that.

Mary's floatation test came back negative, so I guess she drank some of the worming water when I wasn't looking. Her face is still very pale pink though. Makes me think her anemia must be caused by something other than a parasite burden. Once Sandy's health is assured, I'll take Mary for another checkup.

Anyway, I'm still up to my eyeballs in work, so I'd better get cracking!

Cream Crested Legbars???

Eeeeee! I'm so excited because I called the one person in South Australia who breeds CCLs for the backyard market and she said for me to call back on Friday afternoon because that's when she'll be opening the incubator.

She usually sells day old chicks but said we could make an arrangement: if I pay her the pullet price on Friday, she'll grow them out for me and I can collect them later on.

She's got several other buyers lined up too. Hope there are plenty of little girls hatched on Friday :fl

I already picked out their names (of course). Ivy and Hilda, after great aunts.

MJ so happy she is doing better :hugs can't wait to a picture of Sandy :)
Hope Mary is okay too :fl
There's nothing in Mary's behaviour to suggest she's not well. She comes running, she's laying regularly (7 a week), she's always happy. But she's pale. Maybe there's no underlying problem, but it's good to check.
