MJ's little flock

No, but you can give children's aspirin.
Half a tablet with food am and pm but not for more than three or four days.
There is an analgesic+anti inflammatory called Metacam. It's what my vet prescribes for the chickens here.
Thanks Shad, I was trying to remember the dosage and limits.

I'm loving the Christmas carols. I'm rather partial to "The Coventry Carol", all those minor chords, though it's not strictly for Christmas.
It's a sad one, but a timely reminder of the travesties that can be carried out by powerful figures. There are so many less fortunate than myself and I ought to keep them in mind while I overindulge through Christmas. Thank you!

This is something that should be on the front page of BYC. A frightening number of hens get sick and die at what are young ages compared to many of the high production hens.
Good BYC advice would be don't get high production hens, especially from hatcheries if you want them as pets, or even want your chickens to live long lives.
I'm not certain of Sandy's background - she was found walking the streets and brought to live with us. But I can tell from looking at her that she was bred to lay fast and die young. And the point of her beak is snipped off. So I assume she was either a production hen providing eggs for the market or an escaped pet. Either way, I'll do all I can for her, for as long as she needs.

Thank you! That's very good information. I'm grateful.
