MJ's little flock

They NSW fire services have a good reputation here. Spain unsurprisingly has fire problems. Bush fires are much faster moving than the forest fires we get here.
As you write, you get fires every year. This year I don't think there was anything anyone could have done better regarding the Australian fires. There were/are just too many moving too fast.
Very sad about people losing their homes. I imagine people will be taking more home fire preventive measures for those that can rebuild in the original location.
Yes...& no. I was reading about one guy, I think in the Blue mountains, who built a specifically fire proof home. Nothing left of it. For that to happen the fire had to reach temps of 1000C, I think he said. Sometimes there's nothing you can do.

Our firies do a fantastic job but when you have fires racing 200' UP a cliff face, as they did in the Blue Mountains, you can only watch it burn. :(

Yup, it's scary stuff. The problem here for the Park Fire wardens and the local Fire Brigade is the underground burn. You can be standing at one point dousing the fire in front of you and it burns underground and breaks out behind you. We've lost a few firemen who got caught by this.:(

Everyone I know who lives in places with fire risks does so in full knowledge they may lose everything. Hopefully they shop around for the best insurance and keep their policies up to date. And when an emergency is underway people who can help, do so. The rest of us know the best thing we can do is keep out of the way then chip in once the danger has passed.

There was a serious underground fire in a coal mine in Victoria a few yars back - remember that @Ribh ? Was it Hazelwood?

True ~ & we do. :)

My pet peeve is if it got really messy here & we got cut off our best evacuation plan is to head out on the point. Unfortunately that property is now fenced & the gate padlocked because the owner doesn't live there full time & going round by the foreshore is difficult in the best circumstances, let alone encumbered with animals. :( I feel for those trying to defend large livestock. It's just not feasible to get them all out.

It seems odd to me that one owner can jeopardise the lives of many. Why must it be padlocked? In such a small community as your's who would trespass? It's very unjust.

Firstly when it wasn't being lived in, the squatters moved in. :(

Secondly, council declared the owners liable if anyone injured themselves so fencing & gating was to protect themselves.

Thirdly, it's 50 acres of dodgy terrain & bush.

The original owner made a clay & rock ramp for the old barges so there is a large flat area ~ especially @ low tide~ free of burnable material & well away from edges. As Shad once pointed out, a boat is a good idea but there are limits as to how that might work.
