The cicadas have started emerging here. The girls didn't know what to think of them when I first brought them one, but they have caught on quick!

Now they are chasing each other around the yard. They think all their Christmases have come at once!

Cicadas, yum for the chickens the first year they came out in Virginia it was horrible they where everywhere!!! When you walked you crunched.

I have mine using pine pellets - they are a waste product of sawmills and turn to sawdust when wet. They smell lovely and the used litter composts well. Honestly it feels like the perfect solution!

I have never heard of that. Where do you get it?

We used to use those but then the cats would track the sawdust through the house, so we stopped using them.

Knowing the downside is helpful. Thanks.

That must be an amazing time for them. I'd love to see video of them chasing a cicada around.

We had that when I was young but the last two times here have been very mild. The chickens have really missed out.
