MJ's little flock

Mary

Mary is a black Australorp. She is the prettiest of my three chickens with iridescent black plumage and big black eyes that go blink-blink in a very charming way.

Favourite hobby: drinking. Mary is a waterholic.

Favourite saying: wohr-wohr

Rank: formerly Lieutenant, now Captain. Captain's rank was obtained by strategically using her weight, agility and determination to obtain the top spot on the roost from the disgraced former Captain, Janet.

Named after: Mary is named after Mary Kopscanyi. Mary Kopscanyi was my Nana's great-niece. Mary showed me kindness and love from the day I was born until the day she died. Her house is across the street from my house (both houses were built at the same time by the same person - my great-great uncle) but it is now owned by a lovely young family of four. Mary's house was built for her grandmother, Sarah, who was my grandmother's oldest sister. Tragically, Mary's mother died young, so Sarah provided Mary with a loving home and family life. Mary passed away quite suddenly in 2016, although she was well into her 80s. Her husband, Frank, died in 2017. They are both survived by their daughter Elizabeth who I don't call often enough. I'll call her today. Mary the chicken helps me keep Mary Kopscanyi's memory alive.

For background, here are the other profiles.
She’s beautiful! I have two BA hens and a BA rooster. They are so amazing, definitely one of my favorite breeds!

Let's see some photos!
Sure! Here they are!

This is Disco, he is my 9 month old BA rooster. He is the best rooster I could have asked for, he is very loyal to his girls and protects them fiercely. He is very friendly and will just sit in your arms and you can touch and pet him all over!

There’s Disco again, as well as Dawn. Dawn is a 9 month old Black Australorp hen. She is very high in the pecking order and a very loyal layer. She is friendly and fairly calm. She loves Disco and is inseparable from him!

This is Star, she is also a 9 month old Black Australorp hen. Unfortunately, the only picture I could find of her from when she was 4 months old. Just like Dawn, she is inseparable from Disco. She is very sweet and laid back. She gets along great with the other hens.

Disco looks just like Rocky the rooster who lives up my street 🤗

They're co-habiting with remarkable peacefulness. Do I leave them be?

If they are co-sitting when the chicks hatch what will happen do you think?
Will they fight over them or co-parent? Having 2 hens looking out for the babies would surely be an advantage.

I don't know how well I can explain this.
There are steps that lead from keeping chickens to having chickens live with you. I will always attempt to have chickens live with me rather than be their keeper.
One of those steps is to let a hen sit and hatch. Any chicks that hatch then become her chicks rather than yours.
The next step is to let a hen sit and hatch her own fertile egg. But this requires a rooster. Some people can't keep roosters so that step can't be taken.
But once it is, you the keeper have to let go a bit more because the hens become his and the chicks become theirs.
Now you have a family which you provide food and shelter for but no longer own.
Love this point of view. Co-operative living for the future!
