Goodness! You were up early! (I was awake at 2.30am but went back to sleep).Yesterday was day 21. it's still only 3.45am on day 22.
It's the egg I gave her on Jan 4,

I'm a bit old for moving to be easy. It's take five car trips in my son in laws car to get what I had there, to here. Carpet and decorating to do. Carpet is down but I'm still painting. Are you settling in to the new place ok? Is it very far from the allotment?
Lots of reading time on the bus I guess. You can always get a car some timeI'm a bit old for moving to be easy. It's take five car trips in my son in laws car to get what I had there, to here. Carpet and decorating to do. Carpet is down but I'm still painting.
It's a 20 minute bus or train ride to the allotments. It's an easy journey. I won't do every day now, probably only six days a week.
I think this confirms for me that I couldn't cope with trying to hatch eggs under a broody; if I feel this sad vicariously, I don't think I could do it myself! But I think you're very brave for giving it a go, and also being prepared for the worst and not over-optimistic.![]()
DittoI am with you Lozzy, I am a vicarious nervous wreck! I am very admiring of MJ and how she is handling this but not for me. None of mine have ever gone broody so of course I also don't really know how I would handle the stress of that.
Well Australian brush turkeys incubate their eggs in a compost pile so I guess it's warm enough.During one of my first hatches, it was day 25 so I tossed all of the unhatched eggs into the compost bin and moved the chicks to the brooder. A few hours later DIL heard chirping. We went in search and in the compost bin was a live chick screaming its head off. If I remember correctly, that egg was on day 26 when it hatched.
i tried to lay robust emotional groundwork but even with that prep, I'm still very sad for the squashed chick and disappointed my hopes and more importantly, the hens hard work, have come to nothing so far.
