Oh dear. Poor girl. That all sounds miserable for her, and very worrying for you.

I'm very worried about her. But I'm glad she's going back to the vet this evening for another shot. It's reassuring that they'll have eyes on her.

Not quite, he said to reduce her access to foods that might worsen the impaction by reducing her free-ranging.

But no other treatments for the crop because she's passing solids.

ETA, I was surprised by this as most folks on BYC treat impacted crops through massage etc. Presumably her impaction is not a serious case.

I hope she clears it.

I just realised I've been calling it an impaction when really it's a slow crop.

Ah, that makes more sense. Slow crops are often a symptom of other problems.
Generally a full impaction needs treating.

I didn't dare say anything but I was very worried about Mary this morning and thought she was going to die while I was at work.

I've come home from the office early (will crack on with work in a tick) and found she's much better than she was this morning. And she's laid a normalish looking egg. Still a little more elongated than her usual shape, but there are no bands of thick shell on it, whereas all of Mary's previous eggs from this season had bands of thick shell.

I took this photo a moment ago and it shows her joining in a preening party with no apparent discomfort.

Tonight the hens' water is dosed with the probiotics @LozzyR recommended. I'm hoping it helps Janet, and does no harm to Peggy and Ivy. It'll be useless for Mary until her clavulox course is over (Monday morning I think). Because of Mary's treatment regime, I'll keep the probiotics going for a month or less if I see negative effects.

Now, here's a thought. Mary has only just got over peritonitis. Is it good for her to sit and brood at this time? Perhaps this really is a moment to break her? I've called Dr Mark to find out and will report back.

How worrying for you! I’m glad she’s perked up. Dr Graham says the jury’s out when it comes to whether probiotics during antibiotic treatment is pointless or not.
