MJ's little flock

Higher = Safer in their minds. Think about it. It's nature driving them higher. In their minds they are more likely to be eaten if they are too low than they are to be hurt getting down.
My roosts are quite high but they all still eye the rafters. Fortunately they can’t get all the way up there.

Janet has been using the rafter instead of the sawhorses. I don't mind because I figure it helps prevent her bacteria from spreading.

She won't like the transition to the new roost which will bring her down a little lower. I've been pondering how to give her a high perch all to herself.

One might have thought so but this isn't born out in the behaviour. Most I've seen tree roosting are on the lower branches of trees. Being interested I look quite carefully at pictures of tree huggers from other posters and again, most are on the lower branches of the trees.
There is cover from above to consider from the elements and predators. There also seems to be a flight path consideration.

Well there you go. Then why do they want to be so high in a coop setting I wonder? Status? I know in my coop the prime spot when there was only 1 roost was as far from the door as possible. That seems like a survival decision as well but maybe not.

Was that spot next to the wall? The prime roosting spot in my coop is right snuggled up to the wall. I believe that is the case for the @RoyalChick Chicken Palace as well.

Yes indeed. And I read somewhere that when lots of chickens roost in the same tree the prized spot is near the trunk. I don’t know if that is true but it does make some sense to me.

Mary takes the wall seat at my place with the younger ladies further out.

For a time three of the hens roosted next to the wall and they all wanted the place by the wall. I thought it was because it was next to a small window, but maybe the attraction was the wall itself.

The younger chickens roost reaches a nest in the wall, but for now their only consideration is not to be next to Chipie who pecks her neighbors viciously.
